Sometimes you need quick verification to see if your net is down. the quickest best way to do this before you hit paranoia is to create a shortcut to cmd right click properties and then modify the link with
cmd /C ping google.com.
If in the case google is down the whole world has probably come to and end anyway and cockroaches have taken over the earth.
