Bantock, Sir Granville
b 07.08.1868 d 16.10.1946
August 1897 appointed Director
of The Tower, New Brighton. Raised standards and brought in more serious
music (originally just band music) particularly English composers such as Elgar,
Parry and Stanford and also Sibelius who dedicated his 3rd Symphony
to him. He brought Sibelius to Liverpool
for his first visit to England
in 1904 when he conducted the Liverpool Orchestral Society in performances of Finlandia and his
first symphony. Bantock
had taken over the directorship of the orchestra after Rodewald’s
death.
