The 6510 Processor

The 6510 belongs to the 6500 family of 8-bit microprocessors designed and manufactured by MOS Technology. The 6510 is the successor to the 6502, one of the first two products in the MOS Technology 6500 line - the other being the 6501. The 6500 started as a project to develop an improved design for Motorola's 6800 processor, intended as lower-cost processors with a reduced size and additional features. But when the development of the 6500 was essentially "abandoned" by Motorola, the team developing the 6500 design (Chuck Peddle, Bill Mensch, Rod Orgill, Harry Bawcom, Ray Hirt, Terry Holdt, and Wil Mathys) eventually moved to MOS Technology.

Other 6500 processors later included the 6510 (an improvement on the 6502), and Western Design Center's 65C02 and 65C816S.
