La famille de Marie FOUBERT et Jean CUSSON Translated from: "Dictionnaire Biographique du Canada"-Les Presses de l'Université Laval. Farmer, seigneurial attorney, clerk of court, royal notary and acting king's attorney were Jean CUSSON occupations & offices. One could say that the colonists of New France, craftsmen or military men, rather than farmers, were attracted to the fur trade and only moderately interested in agriculture. For most of them, working their land was a part time activity and on the whole was only a necessary duty submitted to with some impatience, and from which they escaped at the first opportunity. There were certainly, some true habitants; Jean CUSSON was one of them. Having married at Trois-Rivieres, 16 september 1656, Marie FOUBERT, a young woman of 15 originally from Rouen, CUSSON settled at Cap-de-la-Madeleine. As of 1667, the couple possessed of value, 7 animals w/ horns and 28 acres, which was quite extraordinary. CUSSON had sufficient resources to hire some farmhands, such as Francois VANNASSE (already there in 1666) and Jean PILON, ages respectively 25 & 40, recorded at his place in 1667. In spite of the duties which he was soon to take on in the realm of justice, he did not neglect the working of his land; in 1681, he declared 6 animals w/ horns & 40 acres! When in 1669, the Jesuits, seigneurs of Cap-de-la-Madeleine, gave CUSSON a commission as notary, seigneurial attorney & clerk of court, the intendant, BOUTROUE d'AUBIGNY, was fighting in Quebec to deny the West India Company the right of appointing notaries, and to restrict the powers of the seigneurs in the area of justice. Although eager to receive CUSSON in the office of seigneurial attorney & clerk of court, the intendant authorized him to act as notary only provisionally, and on the express condition that he would take the title of royal notary. The seigneurs would soon only have the right of presenting notaries, the appointment itself being on the authority of the intendant. CUSSON acted as notary of the Cap until 1687, then from 1687-1700 in Champlain. In 1700, he went to Montreal where he worked four years. He lived at Point-aux-Trembles. In 1704 , age about 70, he retired, from which he emerged temporarily in 1707-1708 when he became acting king's attorney for Montreal. CUSSON & his wife had 12 children. Amazingly for that era, they all lived to adulthood (I have 16 children listed-LH).
Jean CUSSON apparaît aux recensements de 1666 et 1667, au Cap-de-la-Madeleine. Il fut procureur fiscal du Cap-de-la-Madeleine; puis il fut notaire royal le 16 avril 1669 au Cap-de-la-Madeleine, à Champlain entre 1687-1700, et à Montréal entre 1700-1704. Jean CUSSON, né vers 1631, fils de Jean CUSSON et de Jacqueline PEPIN, épouse le 16 septembre 1656 à Trois-Rivières, Québec, Marie FOUBERT dit LACROIX, née vers 1640, fille de Philippe FOUBERT dit Lacroix et de Marie-Jeffine RIVIÈRE.
