Current Moon:

Successful magic depends on many factors. One of the most obvious things to consider is the timing of your spells and rituals with the phases of the Moon.

When the Moon is waxing, it is growing larger in the sky. This phase lasts until the exact time of the Full Moon. From Full to New Moon, is the waning phase, where the Moon seems to disappear until finally it is not visible to the eye for three nights. For this reason. this time is sometimes called the Dark of the Moon or the Black Moon.

Then the Moon starts once again to grow toward fullness. The waxing Moon is the best time to do a spell for growth, beginning new projects, initiation and enhancement. During the waning Moon, do spells to banish evil influences, lessen or remove obstacles or illness, neutralize enemies, and to remove harm.

The three days after the New Moon are the most powerful times to work spells for growth and beginnings which should manifest at the Full Moon. The days just before the Full Moon are the most powerful times for fruition and completion.

The Black Moon is the most auspicious time for banishing and neutralizing spells. Remember that even though the Moon looks full in the sky for two or three nights, when the EXACT time of the Full Moon is reached, anything after that time is a waning influence.

Do your Full Moon spell before the exact time listed.(The Fourth Quarter is the mid-point between the Full and New Moon. The Second Quarter is the point between the New Moon and the Full Moon.

The Moon's magnetic force pulls all that contains water: the tides of our oceans, the blood and fluids of our bodies, and the vital essences of all plant life--such influence can be seen quite clearly in the growth of plants.

All crops that produce their yield above ground should be planted during the Waxing (New to Full) Moon: the first week is especially good for crops that have their seeds on the outside, such as asparagus, cabbage, broccoli, celery and spinach. The second week (between the 1st quarter and the Full Moon) is best for crops that produce seeds on the inside, like peppers, tomatoes, peaches, cucumbers and melons.

During the waning Moon (Full to New Moon) plant root crops such as potatoes, peanuts, carrots and onions. *Do not* plant on the day of the New Moon or Full Moon.

Many other astrological aspects may affect your magical workings, such as the sign the moon is in, the relationships between the various planets, etc.

New Moon Magic:
New Moon workings can be done from the day of the new moon to three and a half days after.
The new moon is for starting new ventures, new beginnings. Also love and romance, health or job hunting.

Waxing Moon Magic:
From seven to fourteen days after the new moon
The waxing moon is for constructive magick, such as love, wealth, success, courage, friendship, luck or health.

Full Moon Magic:
From fourteen to seventeen and a half days after the new moon
Prime time for rituals for prophecy, protection, and divination. Any working that needs extra power, such as help finding a new job or healings for serious conditions, can be done now. Also, love, knowledge, legal undertakings, money and dreams.

Waning Moon Magic:
From three and a half to ten and a half days after the full moon
The waning moon is used for banishing magic, for ridding oneself of addictions, illness or negativity.

Dark Moon Magic:
From ten and a half to fourteen days after the full moon
The dark moon is a time for dealing with attackers, for exploring our darkest recesses and understanding our angers and passions. Also bringing justice to bear.

The Moon usually comes full twelve times in a year, three times in each season. These moons were named by our early English ancestors as follows:

  • Yule
  • Winter Moons:
  • 0 Moon after Yule
  • 1 Wolf Moon
  • 2 Lenten Moon

  • First Day of Spring
  • Spring Moons:
  • 3 Egg Moon
  • 4 Milk Moon
  • 5 Flower Moon

  • The Long Day
  • Summer Moons:
  • 6 Hay Moon
  • 7 Grain Moon
  • 8 Fruit Moon

  • Summer's End
  • Fall Moons:
  • 9 Harvest Moon
  • 10 Hunter's Moon
  • 12 Moon before Yule

However, occasionally the moon comes full thirteen times in a year. This was considered a very unfortunate circumstance, especially by the monks who had charge of the calendar. It became necessary for them to make a calendar of thirteen months, and it upset the regular arrangement of church festivals. For this reason thirteen came to be considered an unlucky number. Also, this extra moon had a way of coming in each of the seasons so that it could not be given a name appropriate to the time of year like the other moons. It was usually called the Blue Moon. There are seven Blue Moons in a lunar cycle of nineteen years. This year (1937)has a Blue Moon in August, the same as 1918. In 1934 and 1915 Blue Moons came in November. The next Blue Moon will occur in May 1940 as it did in 1921. There was a Blue Moon in February 1924. In olden times the almanac makers had much difficulty calculating the occurrence of the Blue Moon and this uncertainty gave rise to the expression "Once in a Blue Moon".

Many different moon names exist, there are a few alternates as well.

  • Wolf Moon {chaste, cold, disting, little winter, quiet, wolf}
  • Horning Moon {big winter, hunger, ice, storm, wild}
  • Storm Moon {crow, plow, sap, seed, wind, worm}
  • Seed Moon {growing, hare, planter's}
  • Hare Moon {bright, dyad, flower, frog, merry}
  • Meade Moon {honey, horse, dyad, lovers', rose, strawberry, strong sun}
  • Fallow Moon {blessing, buck, hay, wort}
  • Barley Moon {corn, fertile, grain}
  • Wine Moon {harvest, singing}
  • Blood Moon {falling leaf, harvest, hunting, vintage}
  • Snow Moon {beaver, dark, fog, mad, shedding, storm}
  • Oak Moon {big winter, cold, long night, wolf}
  • Elder Moon {Blue Moon - the thirteenth moon in a solar year, despite the modern notion that even the ancients called it the second moon in a month... for our matrifocal ancestors who lived by a Lunar Calendar, it was impossible to have two moons in a month, as a moon was a month!}

It is also extremely useful to align your spellwork to coincide with the appropriate astrological influences, to further aid your magickal goals.
