Prior to using any candle in your magical workings you should cleanse the candle and anoint it with a small amount of oil during the waxing phase of the moon. This consecrates the candle and charges it with magical energy. You can also carve or paint appropriate magical symbols onto your candles, to further empower the candles with those energies. The heated tip of your athame works well for this purpose. It is best to use one candle per ritual or spell, and to not use a candle that has been used previously for another purpose. It is also best to allow the candle to burn out by itself, as blowing it out may disperse the energy contained within.

One of the simplest of magical arts which comes under the heading of natural magic is candle burning. It is simple because it employs little ritual and few ceremonial artifacts. The theatrical props of candle magic can be purchased at any department store and its rituals can be practiced in any sitting room or bedroom.

Most of us have performed our first act of candle magic by the time we are two years old. Blowing out the tiny candles on our first birthday cake and making a wish is pure magic. This childhood custom is based on the three magical principals of concentration, will power and visualization. In simple terms, the child who wants his wish to come true has to concentrate (blow out the candles), visualize the end result (make a wish) and hope that it will come true( will power).

The size and shape of the candles you use is unimportant, although highly decorative, extra large, or unusually shaped candles will not be suitable as these may create distractions when the magician wants to concentrate on the important work in hand. Most magicians prefer to use candles of standard or uniform size if possible. Those which are sold in different colors for domestic use are ideal.

The candles you use for any type of magical use should be virgin, that is unused. Under no circumstances use a candle which has already adorned a dinner table or been used as a bedroom candle or night-light. There is a very good occult reason for not using anything but virgin materials in magic. Vibrations picked up by secondhand materials or equipment may disturb your workings and negate their effectiveness.

Some magicians who are artistically inclined prefer to make their own candles for ritual and magical use. This is a very practical exercise because not only does it impregnate the candle with your own personal vibrations, but the mere act of making your own candle is magically potent. Specialist shops sell candle wax and moulds together with wicks, perfumes, and other equipment.

Once you have purchased or made your ritual candle it has to be oiled or 'dressed' before burning. The purpose of dressing the candle is to establish a psychic link between it and the magician through a primal sensory experience. By physically touching the candle during the dressing procedure, you are charging it with our own personal vibrations and also concentrating the desire of your magical act into the wax. The candle is becoming an extension of the magician's mental power and life energy.

When you dress a candle for magical use, imagine that it is a psychic magnet with a North and a South pole. Rub the oil into the candle beginning at the top or North end and work downwards to the half-way point. Always brush in the same direction downwards. This process is then repeated by beginning at the bottom or south end and working up to the middle.

The best type of oils to use for dressing candles are natural ones which can be obtained quite easily. Some occult suppliers will provide candle magic oils with exotic names. If the magician does not want to use these, he can select suitable oils or perfumes from his own sources. The oils soluble perfumes sold by craft shops for inclusion in candles can be recommended.

First thing you have to know, and know fully, is: what do you want? and what are you willing to do alongside a spell to act in combination to get what you want? now I suggest that your desires be couched in ethical terms and fairly well described. the equipment you need for candle magic:

a taper candle of an appropriate color.
a holder for the candle to catch wax spills and prevent fires, as well as a place to put the candle where it will be undisturbed.
fresh water, mixed with salt and consecrated.
the hour of sunrise on the correct day.
and of course, a device for light the candle. matches, lighters.

now, looking at your wishes

White is the color of the moon and the lunar aspects of the goddess it pertains to emotional well being and security, to the home environment and your family. it is a useful color for healing, and when in doubt, use white candles as your default.

Yellow is the color of the sun, which is all about growth, creative expression, and the manifestation of your true will. Use this color for new beginnings, enterprises, and special wishes that may take a gradual period of steady growth.

Orange is the color for Mercury. interestingly orange and yellow can be used for the sun and for mercury, but it is important to know your intent. Mercury is for short range travel plans, communication, thinking, education, tests, job interviews

Red is the color of Mars, which is about striving, ambition, dedication to achieve, aggression, and victory. when you feel you need help in achievement, use a red candle, for mars. when you are looking for the passionate love, again, look to Mars and red.

Green, and also pink, are the colors for Venus. use this for aid in the artistic, in entertaining, for attracting help and aid to you, and of course, in love, especially romantic love, where I recommend pink.

Blue is the color of Neptune. This is all about spirituality, sacrifice, self healing of behavioral problems, nurturing, fantasy, and dreams. it's also for peace, tranquility, and inner sight and resourcefulness. Be careful though, as Neptune gets caught in fancy.

Purple is the color of Jupiter. use this one for expansion, long range travel, long distance communication, higher learning, and your job promotion or raise; also use for luck, as Jupiter is the great beneficent.

Electric blue, I mean really bright and vibrant blue, is the color for Uranus. This power is for breaking habits, making changes, and inviting innovation to come into your life.

Brown is the color of Saturn. Use this to help you attain self discipline and a conservative but steady outlook. it has its foundations in the most solid and earthy areas of growth. Expect the Saturn candle to bring you the slow and but sure way to your goals, particularly in work, career, and important business
relationships.

Black is the color of Pluto. This is the color of self revitalization, of regeneration, of tearing the walls down so that the highest of principles can be rebuilt in its place. Use it to negate harm and danger, to break down life threatening or self destructive habits, and to strengthen your resolve to follow your true will.

Okay, you've got your intent, you've got your correctly colored candle. Now here's the days of the week that correspond with that :

Monday for the Moon.
Tuesday for Mars.
Wednesday for Mercury.
Thursday for Jupiter.
Friday for Venus.
Saturday for Saturn.
and finally, Sunday for the sun.

You can use the color of the candle to manifest the action of your goal, and the day of the week to manifest the circumstances of said goal. Take note of the moon as well, waxing is good for bring new influences in, waning is good for breaking down old influences and expressing yourself to the world. The full moon, of course, rocks.

Now, the salt and water: "Anointing"
Take a vessel of clean water, and say a few words over it, naming it the manifestation of the element of water, which is cleansing, healing, purifying, shaping, and powerful. Next, take up the salt, and name it the manifestation of the element earth, which is strong and powerful as the planet is, the ability to sustain life. Pour the salt into the water, and you have your material for charging the candle. Dip your hands in and rub the salt and water over the wax body of the candle, to cleanse it and prepare it for magical work.

Now you can begin. in the area where you are going to leave the candle, take it, the container, and your fire and set them down. Pause to empty your mind of chatter and get yourself ready to perform magic.

*I gave an exercise here for visualization that I recommended for use in the shower; well surprise! It's the same exercise you do to prepare yourself for magical work. *

The difference is that you don't use the energy you gather to harden up your auric body, you use it to charge the candle with your intent. Take the candle in your hands, and start taking the energy in, but DON'T let it overflow! Hold it in until you're fit to burst.

Then, direct it all through your hands and into the candle, just after saying aloud your invocation and declaration of intent.

Place the candle in its container Then light the candle, go have something to eat, and let it burn down.
