Historical Background of PAPTIK

May 1994 - August 1994

Mr. M.B. Hutagalung, Dean of PTIK (the Indonesian College of Police Science), undertook an extensive quest for finding an effective and relevant martial art to be practiced by students of PTIK (police officers sent to PTIK for advanced studies on police science), particularly female police officers.  Anzai Sensei from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) suggested Aikido to be implemented for this purpose.

Maeda Sensei was the first Aikido instructor, being a representative of JICA Japan, sent to PTIK as a manifestation of the joint  initiatives from PTIK, through Mr. M.B. Hutagalung, and the Indonesian Aikikai Foundation (YIA/Yayasan Indonesia Aikikai), through Mr. Hendratmo.

September 1994 - December 1994

PTIK engaged a comparative studies on Aikido and other Japanese origin martial arts.  Aikido was determined to be one of the mandatory martial arts which should be practiced by PTIK students, particularly female police officers sent to study in the PTIK.

Maeda Sensei was appointed as Aikido instructor for PTIK dojo and other YIA dojos.

The Dean of PTIK issued a permission for the use of sport facilities in PTIK, including Aikido training facilities, by the public. This policy was taken in order to optimize all sporting and training facilities available in PTIK, and to avoid any militaristic impressions, that PTIK is a institution closed to the public.

18 December 1994

The first Aikido trainings were practiced in PTIK Dojo.  The training for female police officers was scheduled at mornings while the training for the public was determined to be undertaken at nights.  Hasnul Fauzan Sensei (at that time 1st Dan) was appointed to lead and be responsible for Aikido trainings in PTIK Dojo.

December 1994 - September 1996

The weekly training schedules, either for PTIK students or the public, was determined twice a week.  Police Colonel Mrs. Fathul Jannah, PTIK Head of Human Resources, consistently supported the idea of opening Aikido trainings in PTIK Dojo for the Public.  The possibilities of admitting PTIK Dojo as one of YIA dojos were initiated.

October 1996

The YIA admitted PTIK Dojo as one of the YIA dojos.  In the same year, PTIK Dojo established a sub-dojo in the Indonesian Institute of Technology (ITI) led by Dedy Tarmizi Sensei.

September 1998

Aikido training sessions for public were scheduled from twice a week to three times a week (on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays).

March 2000

Three PTIK Dojo students (S. Purwono, Dedy Tarmizi and Tb. Safi) were promoted to Shodan (1st Dan) in Yudansha Examination organized by the YIA.

August 2000

Initiated by its board members, PTIK Dojo was transformed into an autonomous organization separated from the YIA.  The organization name was changed into Pusat Aikido PTIK (PAPTIK or PTIK Aikido Center).  Up from this moment, organizational management of PAPTIK became autonomous, including the initiatives in undertaking Kyu examinations.

At the same year, training sessions for public members were increased into 4 times a week (Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays).  The Sunday trainings were initially purposed to develop the personal Aikido techniques of PAPTIK's 3rd Kyu students.  However, as the other Kyu students were keenly interested to join the Sunday sessions, it was then decided that all Kyu students may participate in all training sessions including the Sunday session.

Also at the same year, PAPTIK opened a branch dojo in the Cilandak Sport Center.  This dojo is open for public, led by Dedy Tarmizi Sensei.

June 2002

From the initiative of a member of PAPTIK, a former PTIK student, AKP Gatot Mangkurat Sik. (an officer from the Indonesian Police' Special Force - Mobile Brigade Corps), PAPTIK started Aikido trainings at the Mobile Brigade Command Headquarter, along with the members of the Corps.

18 September 2002

From a decree of the Chief Commander of the Mobile Brigade Corps, the Indonesian Police Force, PAPTIK led by Hasnul Fauzan Sensei (now 3rd Dan) was formally designated to provide Aikido trainings for the member of the Corps.  The trainings are scheduled on Mondays and Wednesdays (currently still closed to public).

20 December 2002

PAPTIK was formally nominated, through a formal notice, as an affiliation of the Japan Ehime Prefecture Branch of the Aikikai Foundation.  Under this status, PAPTIK was entitled to organize Yudansha (degrees of black belt) examinations under a direct supervision from an appointed instructor of the Ehime Branch Japan, currently Satoru Shigekoshi Sensei (now 6th Dan).  The Aikikai Ehime Branch will further act on behalf of PAPTIK in applying for a certification from the World Headquarters of the Aikikai Foundation after examinations have been passed by PAPTIK students.

29 December 2002

Under a direct supervision  from Satoru Shigekoshi Sensei, PAPTIK organized a Yudansha examination.
