Deposits into several accounts of a company belonging to Angel Corcino Mauras, the main witness against Yamil Kouri in the San Juan AIDS Institute fraud trial in U.S. District Court, were examined closely Monday by defense attorneys intent on destroying the witness' credibility. Defense attorney Charles Daniels put two witnesses on the stand who had previously been witnesses for the prosecution - Banco Popular administrative assistant Edwin Diaz Osorio and Juan Baralt, assistant to the vice president of Banco Santander. In addition, he brought a third witness, Jose Castro from Bank Trust Advanced Combo Supply, a company incorporated by Corcino Mauras and his son Julio Corcino de Choudens, had accounts in all three banks. In the accounts with Banco Popular and Banco Santander, checks appeared to have originated at Advanced Community Health Services, the arm that operated the AIDS Institute, for supposed payment of services to other providers, but were deposited in the account of Corcino Mauras, according to the defense. The checks, which had been made out to different companies, appeared deposited in the Advanced Combo Supply account, which was run by Corcino Mauras, former comptroller for the AIDS Institute, and his son, Julio. Corcino Mauras, who pled guilty for conspiring in the alleged multimillion dollar fraud at the AIDS Institute, was the prosecution's star witness against Kouri and defendants Jeannette Sotomayor, former ACHS operations manager, and property custodian Armando Borel Barreiro. Kouri's defense attempted to introduce the theory that Corcino Mauras laundered ACHS money for his own benefit and not by orders from Kouri Castro's testimony began close to the end of Monday's session in Judge Jose A. Fuste's courtroom. The witness began to identify the account of Advanced Food at Bank Trust Federal prosecutor Maria Dominguez alleged that Advanced Food was one of several companies used by the defendants to divert AIDS Institute money. Castro, who is the fourth witness presented by the defense, will take the stand again today in the federal trial, which entered its seventh week this week
