After the first pass C and D take one step back. 
On the second pass, A passes with D and B passes with C. This pass is shown in the next diagram:

After the third pass A and B take one step back. 
On the fourth pass, A passes with D and B passes with C. This pass is shown in the next diagram: 
After the fourth pass A and B take one step forwards.
