MATH WORKSHOP

11/12/04

 

PREREQUISITE – Recommended for students with C- or lower in eighth grade math or teacher recommendation.  This class is for Freshman only unless approved by math department.

 

DESCRIPTION – The Math Workshop course is designed to give the student practice with basic arithmetic and introduce them to beginning algebra.  When they successfully finish this course, they should be well prepared to begin the Algebra I course.  NOTE:  This course is an elective credit and may not be used as a math credit.

 

POWER STANDARDS – Skills and knowledge needed to be prepared for Math Workshop.

1.   Perform basic operations with whole numbers, decimals, fractions, mixed numbers.

2.   Write and solve problems from basic word problems.

3.   Understand and apply place value.

4.   Knowledge of measurement units – US and metric.

5.   Knowledge of basic shapes.

 

COMMON STANDARDSThese standards will be included in every math class at Aztec High School.

1.   Learn to communicate mathematically

2.   Learn to use mathematics in their daily lives.

3.   Become proficient with appropriate computational tools and techniques.

4.   Learn to reason mathematically.

5.   Become mathematical problem solvers.

 

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS These standards list the content and skills that students will learn in Math Workshop.

1.      The student will demonstrate an understanding of integers, decimals, and fractions

A.            Perform the four basic operations. (IA1)

B.            Compare, order, and estimate. (IA1)

C.     Perform problem-solving applications. (IA1)

D.            Perform order of operations. (IA1)

 

2.      The student will demonstrate an understanding of Variable Expressions (Each category to be considered for integers, decimals, and fractions).

A.  Simplify variable expressions.  (IA3)

B.            Evaluate variable expressions. (IA3)

C.            Translate words into variable expressions. (IA6)

3.      The student will demonstrate an understanding of Equations (Each category to be considered for integers, decimals, and fractions).

A.  Solve one- and two-step equations involving the four basic operations. (IA17)

B.   Write and solve a variable equation relative to provided facts. (IA17)

C.     Evaluate and solve problems using simple formulas (e.g., area, perimeter, volume, speed). (IA17)

 

4.      The student will demonstrate an understanding of Number Theory.

A.            Perform operations involving exponent expressions. (IA16)

B.   Write a number using scientific notation. (IA7)

C.            Perform operations requiring factoring. (IA7)

D.            Recognize and/or determine GCF and LCM. (IA7)

E.            Calculate the square root of a perfect square. (IA12) 

 

5.      The student will demonstrate an understanding of ratios, proportions and percents

A.  Write, simplify, and compare ratios. (IA7)

B.   Solve proportions. (IA7)

C.            Convert numbers between the forms:  fraction, decimal, percent. (IA7)

D.  Set up and solve problems using proportions and percents. (IC1)

E.   Solve percent equations. (IC1)

F.   Apply knowledge to real life situations. (IC1)

 

6.      The student will demonstrate an understanding of Inequalities.

A.  Graph inequalities using one variable. (IC4)

 

7.      The student will demonstrate an understanding of the coordinate plane.

A.  Graph points when given coordinates (including fractions and decimals). (IB6)

 

8.      The student will demonstrate an understanding of Statistics and Probability.

A.            Calculate mean, median, mode and range. (IC1)

B.   Apply the counting principle. (IC1)

C.            Determine probability of a given event. (IC1)
