MATHEMATICS PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

 

 

 

CONSUMER MATH

 

PREREQUISITE –Must be a senior.

 

DESCRIPTION  -Students will explore math that is used in everyday life, including housing, automobiles, insurance, personal record keeping, income, checking and saving accounts, credit cards, purchasing, and taxes.

 

 

CONTENT

Apply the following in each ability outcome.

 

  1. Understand basic math operations (addition, subtractions, division and multiplication.
    1. Be able to do basic operations of integers.
    2. Be able to do basic operations with decimals, fractions and percentages and convert between the three.
    3. Be able to apply the basic terms of math operations, including all conventions of writing and speaking math.
    4. Be able to set up and complete operations vertically, horizontally and on a calculator.
    5. Be able to estimate and use mental math to check answers and find/apply formulas.

 

ABILITIES

 

  1. Be able to apply math and problem-solving methods to the process of earning

earning income.

    1. Be able to apply the necessary communications skills (want ads, resume

writing, interview skills, discuss wages and salaries, cooperation skills and talk numbers.

    1. Be able to compare salaries and convert hourly wages to weekly and

yearly income.

    1. Be able to figure a paycheck with standard FICA and income tax.
    2. Be able to calculate raises and determine pay for quota and piecemeal work.

 

  1. Be able to apply math and problem-solving methods to income and sales taxes.
    1. Be able to communicate about taxes intelligently (forms and manuals,

basic terms, cooperation skills and talk numbers.

    1. Be able to complete the 1040EZ form.
    2. Be able to calculate cost of sales tax for various purchases.

 

  1. Be able to apply math and problem-solving methods to daily transportation.
    1. Be able to discuss transportation cost intelligently (want ads, interest rates,

loan agreements, basic terms, cooperation skills and talk numbers).

                  B.  Be able to calculate total cost of purchasing various cars including loans,

                        maintenance, fuel, insurance, parking and storage.

    1. Be able to calculate costs of public transportation and compare to cost of

purchase or to cost of a combined plan.

  1. Be able to apply math and problem-solving methods to housing.
    1. Be able to discuss housing cost intelligently (want ads, deposits, leases,     cooperation skills and talk numbers).
    2. Be able to calculate total cost of various rental options (deposits, monthly rent, insurance, phone, utilities and sharing plans).
    3. Be able to calculate total cost of a basic home purchase (down payment, monthly payments, taxes, insurance, utilities, phone, us of escrow and maintenance).
    4. Be able to compare rent versus purchase.

 

  1. Be able to apply math and problem-solving methods to shopping and  purchasing.
    1. Be able to communicate effectively when purchasing or shopping (advertising, credit agreements, layaway plans, cooperation skills and talk number.
    2. Be able to analyze sales for actual costs, including comparing by cost per unit.
    3. Be able to determine with justification the generally most economical grocers store, which is available.
    4. Be able to compare cost of outright purchase, layaway, credit card and bank loan for various purchases.

 

  1. Be able to apply math and problem-solving methods to gambling.
    1. Be able to determine odds of various gambling games, to analyze odds of lotteries and pull tabs, and to formulate a plan to prevent gambling from becoming a personal problem.
    2. Be able to determine the probability of events happening.

 

  1. Be able to apply math and problem-solving methods to banking, saving, investment, and retirement.
    1. Be able to discuss savings and basic investments intelligently (cooperation skills, basic terms and talk numbers).
    2. Be able to calculate various forms of simple and compound interest and compare different available savings options.
    3. Be able to select, establish and maintain a checking account.
    4. Be able to discuss retirement plans and options intelligently (cooperation skills, basic terms and talk number).

    2. Be able to determine various living expenses from general budget plans and from life.
    3. Be able to apply general budget plans to a given real-life situation.

    1. Be able to organize, plot and graph data.
    2. Be able to read and understand graphs.
    3. Be able to find the men, mode and median of given data.

 

  1. Be able to apply math and problem-solving methods to food, diet, health and fitness.
    1. Be able to count intake of vitamins, minerals, calories, carbohydrates and fats.
    2. Be able to determine the amount of nutrients needed through calorie intake and fat intake.
    3. Be able to plan a diet.
    4. Be able to compare foods by costs and by reading labels.
    5. Be able to discuss intelligently health plans and life insurance (cooperation skills, basic terms and talk numbers).
    6. Be able to understand fitness programs and measuring fitness.
