Algebra
I
Course Syllabus/ Class
Expectations
Instructor- Attardi
Algebra I explores the
basic concepts and vocabulary of algebra.
Students will develop skills in problem solving, signed numbers,
rationalizing, and solving both linear and quadratic equations. In order to be recommended for any upper
level math class, a student must earn 70% or better in Algebra I.
Rules:
Choose to learn by being:
Prepared- come to class with all materials and
assignments
Productive- always work hard and finish what you
start
Respectful- respect yourself, your classmates, and
all school staff
Safe- conduct yourself in a way that is safe for
you and others.
***Students are expected to
follow school policy as outlined in the student handbook.
Classroom Management:
All students are expected
to abide by the rules outlined in this syllabus and the student handbook. Students who act outside the boundaries of
these guidelines will be subject to the following actions:
First offense- verbal warning
Second offense- verbal warning/ parent contact
Third offense- office referral
Required Materials:
Students will need a
one-inch 3ring binder, paper, dividers, a colored pen or pencil, a PENCIL, and
a calculator (TI-30Xa or TI-30XIIs recommended). These materials should be brought to class each and every day.
Textbook:
AGS Algebra text will be
used in the classroom. Handouts
compiled from various resources will be provided for each unit as well.
Grading Policy:
Student grades will be
calculated as follows:
Daily work- 75% of total grade
Tests and quizzes- 10% of total grade
Midterm/ final- 15% of total grade
Assignment
Expectations:
All assignments are to be
neat, free of tears, free of stray marks, and completed in PENCIL. Assignments will not be accepted if they do
not meet these expectations. In
addition, all mathematical steps must be shown, or no credit will be given.
Past due assignments will be accepted for half credit up until test date
covering the assigned material. Since
daily assignments constitute 75% of a student’s grade, it is absolutely
necessary that all assignments be turned in promptly.
Quizzes and Tests:
Quizzes and tests will be
given to assess student understanding of current algebraic concepts. Tests will be announced at least two days in
advance whereas quizzes may not be announced in advance. These scores will constitute 10% of a
student’s total grade for a grading period.
If needed, any quiz or exam can be retaken for credit if scheduled with
Ms. Attardi.
Midterm/ Final:
A midterm or final is given
at the end of each nine-week grading period.
These exams are comprehensive, meaning they will assess all skills
learned to date. Since these individual
test scores comprise 15% of a student’s final grade, it is important for
students to score well. Students may
schedule extra teaching time with Ms. Attardi to help prepare for these
exams.
***NOTE: Completion of daily assignments in a timely
manner and good attendance is imperative for success in this class. Choosing not to complete daily assignments
and/or having excessive absences, may constitute a failing grade for Algebra I.
