Peran PLTN dalam Mendukung Komitmen Pemerintah untuk Mengurangi Emisi CO₂
(Role of Nuclear Power Plant in Supporting of Government Commitment to Reduce CO₂ Emissions) 

Abstract

The government of Indonesian concerns with the issue of global climate change. The attention was visible from the policies, regulations and programs that had been issued to date in the framework of mitigation and adaptation to the greenhouse gases (GHGs). At the G-20 meeting at Pittsburgh in September 2009, the government of Indonesian has committed to reduce GHG emissions in Indonesia as much as 26 percent in 2020. This emission reduction commitment is one of actions to mitigate climate change. Energy sector is expected to achieve emission reductions of approximately 6 percent. One of the options for reducing emissions in the energy sector is by using the nuclear power plant (NPP). But in the national electricity development planning of PT PLN (Persero) from 2009 to 2018, NPP has not yet been introduced as an option for further development. Assuming that the current plan as a baseline scenario, then it can be created the alternative scenario by replacing coal fired power plant using NPP. In the alternative scenario using 1000 MW capacity of nuclear power plant could reduce CO₂ emissions by 8.5 million tones per annum from the year 2020 or approximately 2.15% of total emissions in that year.
