Grandma Churkin
Grandma Churkin
This is a wonderful old picture of Grandma Churkin, Elizabeth Kvasnikoff Cooper Churkin. She was the daughter of Feodor and Maria Kvasnikoff. Feodor was a son of Grigorii and Mavra Kvasnikoff, the first family to settle in Ninilchik permanently.
Elizabeth married Missouri gold miner, Joseph Cooper, for whom Cooper Landing, Alaska, is named (because he found gold there). [Here is an aerial view of Cooper Landing, a very large file, 726K, which takes a long time to download].
Elizabeth bore seven children, Frank, Charles, Matrona (Resoff), Irene (Leman) (my own grandmother), Alfred, Gladys (Deitz), and Andrew. After Mr. Cooper died, she married Steve Ivanovich Churkin, from Odonchino, Russia. They lived in the village.
Notice the Native style boots Elizabeth is wearing and the old style dress. The baby she is holding is Leland Shelford, son of her granddaughter Lydia Resoff Shelford and her husband Tom Shelford.
