Lectures 11 &12: Skeletal System
Objectives:
At the end of this session you will be able to:
Identify types of bones
Identify bones of the body
Identify bones that make up axial and appendicular skeleton
Identify and number the vertebrae
Identify bones that make up the pelvic girdle: ilium, ischium, pubis
Identify bones that make up the pectoral (shoulder) girdle: clavicle, scapula
Give brief description process of bone formation
Explain the process of ossification and bone reabsorption
Outline importance of osteoblasts and osteoclasts working in opposite direction and the importance of calcium levels in bone and blood
Identify hormones involved in the two above processes
List the functions of the skeletal system
Identify arches of food: medial longitudinal arch, lateral longitudinal arch, anterior transverse arch, posterior transverse arch
Identify types of joint and give examples of each: immovable - fibrous; slightly movable - cartilaginous; synovial - ball and socket, hinge, gliding, pivot, condyloid
