Lecture 1: Cells, Tissues, Membranes

Objectives:

At the end of this session you will be able to:

Drew a cells, identifying nucleus, nucleolus, cytoplasm, mitochondria, golgi body, endoplasmic reticulum, and membrane

Give brief explanation of the function of each organelle

Name cell properties: nutrition, growth and reproduction, excretion, respiration, excretion and irritability.

Name the three functions of the cell: osmosis, diffusion and active transport

Give examples of different types of cell

List the 4 main types of tissue: epithelium, connective, muscle, nervous

Give examples of each tissue type:

• Epithelial tissue: simple - pavement or squamous, columnar, ciliated; compound - stratified, transitional
• Connective tissue: areolar, adipose, white fibrous, yellow elastic, cartilage - hyaline; fibro; elastic
• Bone tissue: compact, cancellous
• Muscle tissue: voluntary, involuntary, cardiac

Name the 4 main types of membrane: mucous, serous, synovial
