Lectures 3 & 4: Blood and Lymphatic Systems

Objectives:

At the end of this session you will be able to state:

Functions: transport mechanism, defense against disease, clotting, heat temperature regulator, functions relating to the effects of treatment

Blood: red cells, white cells, granulocytes, lymphocytes, monocytes, platelets, plasma

Circulation: venous drainage of major vessels, heart to lungs - pulmonary circulation, heart to organs and extremities - systemic or general circulation, portal circulation, blood pressure, factors affecting blood pressure

Heart structure: aorta, superior and inferior vena cavae, right and left ventricles, right and left atria, pulmonary arteries and veins, valves, cardiac blood vessels

Circulatory pathway: lymph capillaries, lymph vessels, lymph nodes, lymph ducts

Functions of system: drainage of tissue spaces, production of lymphocytes, absorption of fat, production of antibodies

Major lymph nodes of head and neck: occipital, submandibular, cervical - deep and superficial

Structure of vessels: lymph capillaries, lymph vessels, lymph nodesm thymus gland

Major lymph nodes in body: cervical, axillary, abdominal, inguinal, popliteal
