"A week ago, even yesterday, if you had asked me, 'Which of your friends do you consider would be the most suitable to marry? I would have answered: 'Sally, for he makes me feel good, peaceful and safe!'" — Anne's diary, 6 Jan 1944

Wouldn't you like to look this well when you are 78? Actually, since he's retired, I am sure this photo is not recent. Obviously, Anne was very fond of Sol, who she called "Sally," above. It certainly looks as if he didn't lose his sense of humor, decades later.
During the war, he was put into hiding on a farm. Late in the war, the place was raided. He was sent a holding camp in the Netherlands, which was liberated two months later. He studied chemistry and moved to Israel, working as a university professor and cancer researcher. He is now retired, but they still have a web page for him at the university.
