Tiffany Apan

December 2007

A little background

Tiffany Apan in her original email to me describes her work as
Ambient/Rock/Classical Vocals with some influences of
New Age and World music.

As a classically trained singer and a lover of all musical genres,
Listing her influences as far ranging as Sarah Brightman,
Nightwish, Tori Amos, Dead Can Dance, Loreena McKennit,
Dream Theatre, Tarja Turunen, Amy Lee, Android Lust,
Enigma, Switchblade Symphony, The Cure, Pink Floyd,
Johnny Cash, David Bowie, Enya, Led Zepplin,
Gene Loves Jezabel, Bach, Beethoven, Chopin,Judy Garland,
Gwen Stefani, Natalie Merchant, Sarah McLachlan,
Ofra Haza, Persephone's Dream, Lacuna Coil, A Fine Frenzy,
To name but a few, Tiffany in her notes sets out to draw from
Each influence to create a sound all her own.

Tiffany also adds in her notes on her own myspace.com
She draws inspiration from genres such as classical, opera,
neo classical, gothic, ambient, musical theatre, folk metal,
ethereal pop, new age, electronica, trip hop, shoegaze,
folk, celtic/world, heavenly voices, darkwave, and even a
little 'mainstream' pop/rock.

Certainly from such a wide Setting Sun angle Tiffany is
A wide ranging artist and considering one of Setting Suns
Main believes is to always back artists who operate with
Such a wide brief and sound themselves, it of course makes
Perfect sense for Setting Sun to agree to a interview.

Thanks to Tiffany for the interview.

Setting Sun:

How are tricks and whats happening at the
moment?

Tiffany Apan:
Ah, things are crazy busy right now but in a good
and productive way:)

Setting Sun:

Next, can you tell us a little bit about the
history of your music for example what started
You off or as I like to say sometimes how
fired the starting pistol?

Tiffany Apan:

For as long as I can remember, I've loved music
and singing.

I've always been drawn to music and anything
to do with the arts. At age three I began taking
dance lessons and in middle school I began classical
vocal training and performed in several local
talent shows. From middle school until mid
college I performed in local and regional theatre
companies in musical theatre, operas, Shakespeare, and
cabaret-styled shows. Throughout all this, becoming a
recording artist has always been my biggest
dream. I have been writing poetry and even
little songs since elementary school and
I feel very blessed to be fulfilling this dream
now.

Setting Sun:

Next, music wise can you tell us what are your
influences and what are you listening to at the
moment?

Tiffany Apan:

Oh wow, I have a very large music collection.
I appreciate and enjoy artists from many different
genres. Some of my favorites include
Sarah Brightman, Nightwish, Tarja Turunen,
Loreena McKennit, Dead Can Dance, Enigma,
Lacuna Coil, Sarah McLachlan, Frank Sinatra,
Luciano Pavoratti, Celtic Woman, Mariah Carey,
just to name a few. I believe in keeping an open mind
when it comes to music. You never know what sound
or sounds may influence your next song.

Setting Sun:

I have being listening to a number of your songs
recently, and have really enjoyed them both but have
being particularly in the two different mixes of the
song Ghost that are available. Can you tell us a
little bit more about how these very different mixes
came about as both are really, really different and do
work really well.

Tiffany Apan:

Originally there was only going to be the one version
of the song (the ballad). The remix was actually an
idea of my sister's. Jason English, my music
collaborator, and I were at my parent's house for dinner
and we played them 'Ghost.' This was shortly after we
wrote and produced the song. After playing it for
everyone, my sister spoke up and suggested making a
dance remix of the song. At first, Jason and I weren't too
sure because Ghost didn't really seem like the kind of
song that could be a dance song. However, Jason began
playing around with different things and we decided that
it just might work. It wasn't a typical dance remix, but it
was a version that gave the song an entirely different flavor
and feel without completely losing the essence of the song.

To summarize it, the lyrics came from several small poems
in my journal, Jason and I wrote the music together,
and I give credit of the birth of the remix to my sister:D

Setting Sun:

Do you play concerts? If so, how do they compare to
your concerts if not do you have any idea how you
would go about it?

Tiffany Apan:

Yes, I do play concerts and enjoy it very much. I
always try to make the shows match the music as
much as possible. I also like the thought of creating a
stage that can temporarily bring the audience
into another world.

Setting Sun:

What plans do you have next music wise? Do you have
any concerts / recording planned?

Tiffany Apan:

We are kicking off the first have of our 2008
A Poets Labyrinth Tour. This half of the tour will
run from January-June of 2008. We have twelve
confirmed venues in 10 cities one of them includes
a show with the internationally acclaimed prog
rock band, Persephones Dream. We may add another
show date or two to this half of the tour. The second half
will run July-November and that will be announced in
April or May 2008. As for recording goes; on top of
the release of my debut album, I plan on collaborating
with some other musicians and bands for side projects.

I also am laying out the blueprints and getting ideas
for the second album.

Setting Sun:

Where are you from? Whats the music scene like you
are? Have you seen any good concerts recently?

Tiffany Apan:

I am originally from Wilkes-Barre, PA and
currently reside near Pittsburgh, PA. The music
scenes are ok for what they are, but I could
never make a living playing only in either
the town I grew up in or the town where I reside.

I unfortunately havent had the chance to check
out many shows. Some of the best Ive seen were
Sarah Brightman, Nightwish, and I was at an
awesome Ice T showJ

Setting Sun:

Anyway, a few more light hearted questions to
finish off with, first what would be your dream job if
you were not making music?

Tiffany Apan:

I would be an entrepreneur of some kind. However,
Jason and I are founding our own music company,
publishing company, and I may come out with
my own brand line sometime down the road.
Im interested in things such as candles, soaps,
and essential oils.

Setting Sun:

What would you like to be doing when you are 60?

Tiffany Apan:

Making and performing music!

Setting Sun:

Lastly, what will you be doing when you are 60?

Tiffany Apan:

Making and performing music!
