Little Whores on the Prairie

Little Whores on

The Prairie

September 2005

A little background:

Doing this interview bought back a lot of memories from the early of

Pre Setting Sun, when I used to run my website back at university

Under the name of “Rising Sun” (R.I.P. but run between 1999 – 2001).

Often certainly during the early days of “Rising Sun” – I would rarely

Actually interview bands / singers by e mail… Most of them used to

get done by me actually posting the questions to me and then watch

my face often when I get them back in the post and then sometimes

have to spend hours and hours translating what had been wrote.

“Little Whores on the Prairie” not being a old fashioned sort of band

bought a lot of memories back from that time by simply posting there

answers back to viva old good fashioned Royal Mail.

True to form with “Setting Sun” – I first heard of this hardcore –

perhaps Babes in Toyland/Daisy Chainsaw/Queen Adreena/

early Hole expect totally different from all of them back at the

start of this year after reading a review of their six track mini

album I contacted the band on [email protected]

got a copy of their album, loved it, approached them for a

interview only for the interview to get slightly delayed as

things sometimes do, but it was worth it.

The band can be contacted on their e-mail address as quoted above

[email protected] or through their Yahoo

Group, which can be found here and joined easily…

Make sure you check out the two mp3’s available for download

there (which I posted there with the permission of the band)..

Cheers to all of the gang here for producing one of the

funniest interviews I have read in ages!

(and also one of the longest!)

Good luck with the forthcoming gigs… Hopefully I’ll caught up

with all of them someday…

Cheers

Setting Sun:

Hi there! How are things and what’s happening at the

moment?

Cecila Sex Word:

I am sat in a haunted pub in Yorkshire with

the rest of LWOTP!

I have just affixed my wig and all revved up

and ready to go!

We are embarking upon a conversation on the demise

of Busted to James Bourne's impending solo career.

Shelly:

I.P.A. Beer smells.

Crystal Parker:

Hello and thank you for the interview! At the moment

there’s some death metal action (Mitoen) on the stereo

and caterpillar birthday cake being devoured.

The Lemon Kid:

Hello Andy.

Things are fine thanks, just sat at home on the sofa.

Might watch a video later.

Setting Sun:

Now can you tell us all a little bit about you all i.e. what

started you off in a band, who fired the starting

pistol etc?

Cecila Sex Word:

I enjoy firing the odd pistol actually (ooh matron!)

I wanted to be famous and wear expensive clothes and be a

diva! with a poodle!

I waned to say a big "bogger off" to everyone who pains

me! I also want to get in "with David Walliams!

PHWOAR!

Crystal Parker:

I enjoy reading and writing poems, short stories and am

currently recording all my dreams and writing an essay on

Kandinstry.

Natalie (aka Cecilia) was the one who came up the band

name, we didn’t really do anything musically for a year

or so and then one day, Cecila wrote a song and bought it

round to my house and we just started playing, it wasn’t till

later that we accumulated a bassist and drummer.

Shelly:

T'other bassist left, I filled their boots - HOORAH!

The Lemon Kid:

I’m a wrier and I live Dawn (Guitarist and Scrope).

We all live in roughly the same geographical area so it was

Kind of inevitable that we’ll all bump into each other

Eventually…….. I was the final member of the original

Line-up to join so I had the starting pistol fired at me

really.

It was all Dawn and Natalie’s idea.

Setting Sun:

In relation to "Little Whores".. What are your musical

influences and what have you all been listening to recently?

Cecila Sex Word:

When we started - I was into Hole - Courtney Love was

a big inspiration but not now she's bearing the child of

Alan Partridge!

I've been listening to Girls Aloud, Ramones, Jayne

Mansfield and Fuzzbox! Oh Yes, I am very eclectic!

Shelly:

The Dresden Dolls, The Blood Arm, Hole, Tembld,

Mulusky, Queen Adreena, Babes in Toyland, Shampoo,

X Ray Spex.

Crystal Parker:

Musical influences for me would range from Queen

Adreena, Sonic Youth, Blur, Sex Pistols.

I’m a sticky power chord kinda girl, which is

probably why in relation to L.W.O.T.P – I’m influenced

by Green Day!

Been listening to a lot of Slipknot, Daisy Chainsaw,

N.I.N (Nine Inch Nails), Sneaker Pimps and

Motomark.

The Lemon Kid:

When we first started I couldn’t play the drums so in

The early days ineptitude was a large factor in determining

The sound.

I don’t really listen to much punk to be honest.

I have a lot of admiration for free jazz drummers..

Dylan Van Der Schytt from Tigersmilk is one of my

Current favorites. He totally approaches the drum kit

In terms of it’s physical dimensions, using all the frames and

Stands as instruments.

It’s incredible.

I’m really interested in the tonal qualities of percussion,

I’d like to work some of those concerns into future material.

Right now, I am enjoying the more abstract end of

Electronica, free jazz and quite a lot of really amorphous ambient

Drone stuff.

Setting Sun:

It is also good to see from recent conversations and also

looking at your Yahoo group that you play concerts..

How does your  concerts compare / differ from your studio

recordings? Is their one you prefer over the other?

Crystal Parker:

Concerts are definitely a lot trashier and punk than our

recordings – there’s often a improvisation and noise, we

like the raw sound! I enjoy playing live a lot more than recording

(Very Stressful!)

But it’s great to hear what you can achieve in a recording and

play it to improve our sound.

Cecila Sex Word:

'Studio' Recordings are a pain in mine rear! I would rather

play live in front of strangers and strapping young muscular

males (ha ha!) We manage to make people laugh and dance,

and the odd time have all our eyes poked by aroused males

on the front row!

I love playing live and unleashed!

Shelly:

Live gigs are Louder, Trashier, Asethetically arousing.

The Lemon Kid:

We’re generally a lot looser live.

Sometimes we slide over into noisier impro.

I think as our sound develops the discrepancy will widen.

Setting Sun:

I've gotta ask you also - where on earth did you get

The name of your group.. Now that is a name for a

group!

Shelly:

If you google the band filthy Japanese Porn says aloha!

Crystal Parker:

Cecila came up with the name but it’s also midget porn

Film, which we often get mistaken as.

Cecila Sex Word:

Well, it's not really that exciting! I was just playing

Around with words one day and was amazed at my sense

Of humor!

About a year later we discovered a midget porn film

Of the same name! PHWOAR!

Ian:

Ha Ha ask Natalie (aka Cecila).

Setting Sun:

I think my favorite song of yours I have (so far anyhow) is

The 1st track on your six track mini album "Striptease..."

Can you tell us a little bit more about this track...

Cecila Sex Word:

I like that one as well!

The words are about how some women hurt

themselves with corsets!

Also about getting a bit braver! The song works on

so many different levels, it’s very arty!

Ha Ha! I feel silly trying to explain it!

Blushing!

Crystal Parker:

“Striptease” brings form memories back of

trawling all our stuff – through Nottingham to Magnet

Studios often to find Iain (aka. The Lemon Kid) drunk

after one pint!

We virtually finished this song in our first proper

practice – a long with a few other classics you should

own.

The Lemon Kid:

Well, we wrote it in our first practice, along with about six

other songs that we still play today! I’d been on a date earlier in

the afternoon and was a little bit tipsy! Whoops!

Setting Sun:

I know also from recent conversations that you have a

number of new material / songs written - how does this

compare to your older songs?

Cecila Sex Word:

New Stuff is a lot more complicated and a bit harsher! I’m

determined to write a pop song to compliant it all,

Stock, Aitken and Waterman style – but it’s a lot harder!

Crystal Parker

We stepped up a gear on the newer songs, they are

certainly a lot heavier and possibly even shorter!

They are raucous in style but the ones we are working

on at the moment are more complex and have incorporated

new styles and techniques which will give us a slightly

different sound.

The older stuff I would say is poppier and

Blondie- esque, standard punk action.

The Lemon Kid:

The newer stuff is a little more jagged… More stops

And starts and tight syncopations.

Hopefully in the near future, I’ll be moving off of the

Drums to handle a veritable plethora of other stuff.

Now that we have got people listening we need to start

Challenging them.

Give them something to really interact with.

Setting Sun:

Seem to recall you have a number of concerts coming

up can you confirm to us what they are?

Cecila Sex Word:

See Others.

Crystal Parker:

Ian (aka The Lemon Kid) will fill you in.

The Lemon Kid:

We’re playing:

Derby Bar Vida with Malibo Diasy

(September 12th)

Notts, Junkition 7 with Groovie Ghoulies

(October 7th)

Birmingham with Wasted Race

(October 16th)

Derby Victoria Inn for Halloween night!

Setting Sun:

By the way, where are you all from? What's the music

scene like where you live? Have you seen any god gigs

recently?

Cecila Sex Word:

We are from a small place called Loscoe. No Music

scene, but 5 pubs with an excellent karaoke selection

inc. Girls Aloud and Dolly Parton! I love hanging around in

the sticks with my kissing cousins – ha ha!

Shelly:

Leeds - Best recent gigs - Bilge Pump, The Blood Arm,

Pink Grease

Crystal Parker:

We live in a small village called Loscoe on the outskirts

of Derby and 20 minutes from Nottingham.

The local music scene is poor apart from our friends

band “Circles End”.

Derby and Nottingham aren’t too bad gig wise but it’s

mainly local or small acts.

The best band at the moment that I’ve seen are

called Patchwork Grace.

They’re very much like Queen Adreena, very

sleazy, dirty and arousing.

The Lemon Kid:

We’re from a small town called Loscoe inbetween Derby

And Nottingham.

There aren’t too many bands around the area that I like

But I have to admit.

We are in other bands too:

Dawn is in CCG and Cocks and Throbbers

And I’m in You Trojan! / Trumpets of Lazarus

/ Mound / Multiple Fracture Band…

Dawn and I are both writers, so the literature scene

Is just as buzzing as the music scene!

Setting Sun:

Anyway, a few more slightly more light hearted questions

to start winding down with... Firstly, what would you like

to be doing when you are 60?

Shelly:

Living in a pink castle with turrets maybe in Vegas,

shacked up with Dylan Moran.

Crystal Parker:

In front of a log fire and a leather settee, reading

and writing with my beloved.

Cosy, relaxed, aroused.

Cecila Sex Word:

A 20-year-old male! I’ll be a pervert by then,

fingers crossed! Or David Walliams!

The Lemon Kid:

Living in a small hut in Tahiti Writing.

Setting Sun:

Lastly, something light to finish off (Borrowed from a

pal's zine almost) - Imagine you were ship wrecked

on a desert Island and could have (Clearly have second

sight here – lol) the choice of having 5 records or Cd's

with you with a stereo of course- what would be your

desert Island discs?

Shelly:

Mclusky, Do Dollas (Muclusky)

The Dresden Dolls (S/t)

Hole (Live through this)

Queen Adreena (Drink me)

Te Eighties Matchbox B Line Disaster - The Royal

                                                                 Society

Cecila Sex Word:

This probably changes all the time at the moment..

1)      Girls Aloud – “What will the neighbors say?” –

The only bad songs on it are the 2 cover

versions! Hopefully after this endorsement

I’ll be on Cheryl Tweedy’s wedding list!

2)      Jayne Mansfield – Busts up Las Vegas – Easy

listening, classic hilarious lyrics by the blonde

      bombshell

3)      Ramones – Any album really other than “too

tough to die” or “Adios Amigos” Probably the

best one is – oh, I don’t know

4)      “Look at the hits on that” – Fuzzbox  - I love

them! Absolutely great! Head to toe!

5)      “Sushi a la Mode” – by Lunachicks.

The Lemon Kid:

This would change on a weekly basis, but at the

Moment:

  1. John Coltrane – Ascension
  2. Double Leopards – Halve Moon
  3. Xiu Xiu – “ A promise”
  4. Black Dice “Beaches and Congors”
  5. Albert Ayler – “Holy Ghost”

Crystal Parker:

Top 5 Desert Island Discs at present 30/08/05

1)      Queen Adreena – Drink Me

2)      Menswear – Nuisance

3)      Korn – Korn

4)      Manic Street Preachers – Generation Terrorists

5)      Nine Inch Nails – The Fragile

A few other interesting facts:

     1) I’m learning Morse code so I can get in with

           Eugene from Big Brother.

     2) My favourite tea is lemon and lime

     3) I love making people watch care bear videos

     4) We all enjoy playing the skinflute!
