Hex
August 2006
A little background:
This is probably the easiest interview
I have ever gathered through my travels
As ‘Setting Sun’
Often in my gise as Setting Sun’s chief
Scribe I would encounter bands often
Through my travels through life or
As it seems like more and more nowadays
Through myspace.com
Manchester based Hex is one such
Example – although I actually met Corey
Aka Hex through work oddly enough
At my current job at CIS (Co-operate
Insurance Services) who I learned
About played with a few bands, one
Of which the very technological based
Hex who came across as a cross between
All kinds of things like Squarepusher,
Boards of Canada, Uncle, DJ Shadow
and at least six non dance music acts
I could list but manages a very
Individual sense of brilliance…
Make sure you check out his page
On myspace.com and nag him about
Some of his other projects he
Has on the go:

Cheers again for everything

Setting Sun:
Whats happening at the moment
and how are tricks?
Hex:
Things are all good, in the studio for a
week then off to play at the portofino
festival next week, southern
Italy, ahh ...i cant wait!
Setting Sun:
Although I have been speaking to you
for a bit, as I always say there are people
who clearly wouldnt have heard of you,
so can you get us the goss how Hex got
going or as I like to say who fired
the starting pistol etc?
Hex:
I have always played in bands, used to
spend long welsh winters trying to copy beatles
songs on a 4-track tape machine, sang and
played drums in various bands and
after studying with Ian Carmichael (Lambs'
producer) i have been writing and
recording my own songs.
I also produce for other bands and
have just engineered the new E.P for a great
new Manchester artist,- Ponyboy.
Setting Sun:
3. In relation to Hex - what have
proved your inspirations and
what are listening to at the
moment?
Hex:
I love James Lavelle (unkle) and Nirvana
first and foremost but love and listen to
anything good.
My heros are Michael Sipe, John Lennon
and Bjork and just love being able to
get my songs out to people.
Setting Sun:
4. Do you play concerts / gigs as
Hex? How do these compare to your
studio recordings or if not how
would you plan your concerts?
Hex:
I don’t perform much as Hex but always
test the songs out at open mike nights
on acoustic guitar, it has to be a good song
no matter how i choose to produce it. I
am currently collecting enough stuff to be able
to play anywhere and a good enough laptop
so i can take my studio on the road.
I am also in talks with some installation
artists as to performance with visuals
and mutimedia...watch this space...
Setting Sun:
I Have been listening a fair bit to your
tracks on your myspace account probably
my favourite so far is Hypno
Can you tell us a little bit more
about this track?
Hex:
look into the eyes...not around the eyes...
i have always had difficulty sleeping...until
i wrote Hypno.
Now i can fall asleep anywhere but often
wake up thinking i am a chicken.
Setting Sun:
6. Out of interest, where did the
inspiration for your name Hex come
from out of interest?
Hex:
A hex is a bad spell, or a curse if you like.
I like to spread the love. ;-)
Setting Sun:
Whats next for yourself do you have
any more releases / concerts
planned etc?
Hex:
I have a load of new songs, gonna stick
them up on myspace soon,
I keep getting asked to perform all over
the uk but need some more money first.
Setting Sun:
A few slightly more lighter questions to
wind down with - what would be your
ideal job if you were not a rock
and roll star?
Hex:
I have always dreamed of a life in
the heady and exciting world of
insurance...any ideas?
Setting Sun:
What would you be like to be doing
when you are 60?
Hex:
I would dearly love to sit on a porch
with a big gray beard and play two
chord dirges to all the passing
neighbours.
Setting Sun:
What will you be doing when you
are 60?
Hex:
Pissing in my pants and saying
inapproppriate things to
policemen
