A
little background
What I like about the
Internet more than anything else, it
Gives you the chance to
communicate with people from
Other countries.
So far since I first formed Setting Sun in 2003, I think
I have interviewed over 90 acts / bands from a while host
Of other countries including America, Brazil, Germany,
Sweden, Canada, Thailand, Iceland to name but a few.
I dont think so far, however have ever interviewed an act
From Denmark, let alone a act like Denmarks Catya
Who managed to fuse as interesting a combination as?
What we have heard as perhaps best described on her
Own myspace.com account Beautiful melodies...weaved
into an ambient/
electronica backing, evocative music,
chill out, sensual, spiritual, funky, emotional and
soulful.... The violin is her Stroking Voice... She uses
it
in a completely different way than other violinists do...
producing breathing and vibrating sound which resembles
more the female voice than a usual violin...You can feel
and smell the sound...
What I loved about this
music when I first heard was the fact
was when I read the
description above, firstly I thought the
description was beautifully
suitable, but what I liked about
it in contrast to a lot of
other classical music I have heard,
this sounded pure and
honest and straight from the heart.
With music as honest and
beautiful as this, it was only natural
that Setting Sun would
want to contact the artist in question
for an interview.
A special thank you for
Catya for the interview.
She can be contacted at her
website which is:

Setting Sun:
How are things and
whats happening at the
moment?
Catya
Mar:
Today Im doing the last of
a series of shows (as one of
the stars at the musical
"Le Prince") in the Berne
Stadium (Switzerland), then
going back home to Denmark
for a few days (I have to
create a new website, my old one
was destroyed a bit back destroyed
some days ago.....),
after that I am going to do
some concerts in Germany....
Then im going to be in the
studio in order to
Compose/produce/record a
couple of new songs......
then there are some
concerts in DK and later this year Ill
be touring the UK as
well....so, lots of nice stuff
happening....
Setting Sun:
Next can you tell us a
little bit about the history of
your music etc i.e.
who fired the starting
pistol etc?
Catya
Mar:
Im from a German
classical-musicians home where
everybody was playing some
instrument....of course
I did want to join...was imitating
my Russian violin
teacher, who always used to
play in a terribly fast tempo.....
Setting Sun:
Musicwise, what are your
influences and what
are you listening to at
the moment?
Catya
Mar:
My influences have been
composers, such as
J.S. Bach, Beethoven, Ravel
etc., until I found
out that the ambient/new
age/electronica was MUCH
more my love which was about
two years ago....
since then I have
discovered and do like
Enigma, Kitaro, Delerium,
Deep Forest.....
but do not listen to others
music too much, because
I can get confused by other
styles
when composing/producing my
own....
Setting Sun:
Have being listening to
all of your tracks on
myspace.com a bit
recently and have being
really enjoying them. I
think however my favourite
song is I have heard (so
far anyhow) is ethereal
loneliness Can you
tell us a little bit more about
this song?
Catya
Mar:
Well, yes, and thanks so
much for your compliment!
Ethereal Loneliness is one of my favourite songs, too.
Its the most recent I have done, my violin got quite a bit
of "stereo-delay",
which is a new thing as it has been
remaining natural/acoustic
before...and then I took
those female voice shouts,
you can find in
Logic Express programs,
made them sound really
high and put lots of delay
on them, now they do sound
as really strange
birds.....was fun.... all the time while
producing Ethereal
Loneliness I bear in my mind the
atmosphere of a gorgeous,
lonely (as a positive thing....)
country, a feeling of
amazing nature, great ness.....
Setting Sun:
Have noticed certainly
your approach does
change in your songs
from when you have a
full orchestral backup
to when you playing
solo to electronical
backing? How does your
approach change when you
play alongside other
people?
Catya
Mar:
I do mostly play together
with my computer....:)
Setting
Sun:
Do you play concerts? If not, how would
you approach it?
Catya
Mar:
I do play lots of them....
Setting Sun:
Whats next for you do
you have any further
releases / maybe gigs
planned?
Catya
Mar:
Lots of...as I told above.
And sure many more
albums to come! Im half
done with my second cd....
Setting Sun:
Seem to recall you are
from Aarhus, Jutland,
Denmark, whats the
music scene like over there?
Have you being to any
good gigs recently?
Catya
Mar:
In Denmark I mostly do play
in Churches, as the
ambient/electronica scene isnt
really existing...its
rock and "hard
stuff" they want to hear.
Setting Sun:
What would you like to
be doing when you are 60?
Catya
Mar:
Composing, playing
concerts, doing interviews:).....
Setting Sun:
Lastly, what will you be
doing when you are 60?
Catya
Mar:
The above!
