Then Unihockey could be just what you are looking
for....
Fast, Furious and Fun…
Unihockey
is one of the sports with the greatest potential growth
in Europe. Perhaps not a sport you may have come across
in the UK, but worldwide there are over a million players,
and in 2004 24 nations competed in the Men’s World Championships
culminating in the final between Sweden and Finland
played in front of over 15,000 spectators.
Unihockey
is a fast and exhilarating game which has taken bits
of various sports such as traditional field hockey,
roller hockey and ice-hockey, combining them into a
true sport for all. The National Tournament held in
May 2004 involved both men and ladies, with ages ranging
from 12 to 60+ all competing in the one competition!
The
first international game was played between Sweden and
Finland in 1985 although the game has been around for
much longer in one form or another across the world.
Unihockey as we know it today has been taken up most
readily in the Scandinavian Countries, with Sweden and
Finland leading the nations on the world stage. Played
indoors with sticks with a plastic blade, a white plastic
‘airflow’ ball (similar to a golf practice ball but
hockey ball size) and with a goal at either end, the
game can be fast and frenetic. If you have come across
Unihoc in UK schools, replace the puck with a ball and
you are virtually playing Unihockey already, it is just
faster and more fun.
Teams
can consist of up to 20 players in tournaments, of which a
goalkeeper and 5 outfield players can be on the pitch at any
one time, with substitutions made whenever you want. This
ensures that everyone has a chance to get involved.
