Star Wars

Star Wars Episode I - The Phantom Menace
Every generation has a legend.
Every journey has a first step.
Every saga has a beginning...
Return to a galaxy far, far away in the first chapter of the mythis STAR WARS saga.
Set thirty years before the original STAR WARS film, Episode I introduces young Anakin Sykwalker, a boy with special powers, unaware that the journey he is beginning will transform him into the evil Darth Vader. Obi-Wan Kenobi, the wise old Jedi from the original series, is a determined young apprentice and Palpatine, well known as the evil Emperor, is an ambitious Senator in the Galactic Republic. It is a time when the Jedi Knights are teh guardians of peace in a turblent galaxy and a young Queen fights to save her people. In the shadows lurks an evil force waiting for the right moment to strike.

The Film
This was probably doomed from the start as it was impossible to live up to the hype. An annoying little turd (Jar-Jar Binks) ruins the whole tone and seems to turn it into some kiddies fairytale. George Lucas seems to have gone all giddy on us. It does have some redeeming qualities though. The effects are perfect, and the light-saber fight at the end is currently the best of the saga (which Episode III looks set to threaten). Just the sillyness seems to take over and mess up the whole show. A shame for a great series to be so annoying, even to fans.
Film: 6/10

The DVD
I own it on horrible VHS, but from what I've read of the DVD, it's excellent, like Episode II.

Star Wars Episode II - Attack of the Clones
The STAR WARS saga continues with Episode II ATTACK OF THE CLONES. Anakin Skywalker has grown up into an accomplished Jedi apprentice, and he faces his most difficult challenge yet as he must choose between his Jedi duty and forbidden love. See the climactic Clone War battle and Jedi Master Yoda in the ultimate lightsaber duel.

The Film
A massive improvement over Episode II, but still not really up to the quality of the original trilogy. The seeds are planted for Anakin's (Hayden Christiansen) turn, particularly with his rebellious attitude at the beginning of the film, when talking to Obi-Wan (Ewan McGreggor). Again, excellent effects, but this time they don't seem to take over, as Episode I did, though they are still more than plentiful. The story is obviously progressing in this Episode, which improves again on its predecessor. The Yoda fight at the end, though impressive visually, also looks very silly - one moment he's limping along relying heavily on his walking stick, the next he's sumersaulting about all over the place. Other than this, the sillyness from Episode I has thankfully not been continued, and all looks set for Episode III to possibly be the best, although maybe it shouldn't be hyped up too much, after Episode I's dismal efforts.
Film: 8/10

The DVD
Extensive. So much to look at you don't know where to begin, or when it will end. This is really as it should be, though, for such a high profile film - you'd expect them to film so much behind the scenes footage. The extras are varied and not too serious - the mockumentary about R2-D2 is superb. Make sure you have it, if only for this disc.

Star Wars Episode IV - A New Hope
STAR WARS is an elaborately-spectacular film that represents the ultimate in cinematic entertainment. Writer/Director George Lucas' unrivaled passion for space fantasy, adventure, and romance is captured on screen with awesome special effects and extraordinary, bizarre space creatures. Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) is held hostage by the evil Imperial Forces in their effort to take over the galaxy. Venturesome Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and dashing Captain Han Solo (Harrison Ford) team together with the lovable droid duo, R2-D2 and C-3P0, to rescue the beautiful princess and restore justice in the galaxy.

The Film
Groudbreaking effects that tell the story well - as they should. One of the best films of its time, a classic that holds up reasonably well today (though Episode V and VI fair better). The story introduces the characters well, and continues to develop them throughout. The acting is excellent. There's little to pick falt with, other than after watching it as many times as I have, it does get boring eventually, because when you think about it, not that much happens: princess captured, princess rescued, Death Star blown up. It's probably one of the only flaws, other than the stormtrooper banging his head.
Film: 9/10

Star Wars Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back
The Battle Continues...
In this spellbinding STAR WARS sequel, the battle to save the galaxy from the evil Empire rages on. Like Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) and Chewbacca face attack by the Imperial forces and its AT-AT walkers on the ice planet Hoth. While Han and Leia escape in the Millennium Falcon, Like travels to Dagobah in search of Yoda. Only with the Jedi Master's help will Like survive when the dark side of The Force beckons him into an ultimate duel with Darth Vader. An amazing array of speical-effects, blazing action, and imagination, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK has been hailed as one of the greatest motion pictures ever made.

The Film
One of the most satisfying sequels ever made, this is probably the best of the original trilogy (but not quite enough to receive a 10). The opening battle on Hoth is excellent, and sets the struggle up well, which the rest of the film continues even better. There's a feeling that they're always behind, and you're wanting them to do well, but nothing goes well. A slightly repetitively faulty Millennium Falcon is a little disappointing, but quite a good surprise at the end, after you'd been assured it had been fixed. The whole film builds up to the fight between Skywalker and Vader, and then shocks you with the revelation at the end, which if you've not seen the film, I'm sure you're aware of.

Star Wars Episode VI - Return of the Jedi
The Empire falls...
The Millennium Falcon flashes through hyperspace and creatures from all over the galaxy defy the Galactic Empire in this stunning chapter of the STAR WARS saga. After rescuring Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) from certain doom at the hands of crime lord Jabba the Hutt, Luke (Mark Hamill) rejoins Yoda. Only by completing his Jedi training can he become a true Jedi Knight and defeat Darth Vader and the dark side of the Force. With favourites like Chewbacca, R2-D2 and C-3P0, plus the small but stalwart Ewoks, RETURN OF THE JEDI takes the STAR WARS adventure to new heights of excitement.

The Film
The Ewoks are boring. Why does Luke have to face Darth Vader again when he's already done that? Seems like they ran out of ideas...
But it's still Star Wars. The end attack on the Death Star is exceptional, pushing the (then) limits further again, as the first one did. The battle on Jabba the Hutt's barge shows off Luke's skills and finishes off ties with Boba Fett, although he might have deserved a more dramatic end than he got, but it's poetic justice for Han Solo at least. Overall, fairly satisfying, I think better than the original, but not as good as The Empire Strikes Back.
Film: 9/10
