Kill Bill

Kill Bill Volume 1
The Bride was once part of a group of top female assassins called the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad. When she realises that she's pregnant she decides to leave, assume a new identity and get married. This does not sit well with Bill, her former boss. On her wedding day, he along with the other members of the group attacks the wedding party leaving them for dead... The Bride awakes from being in a coma for five years and sets out to get her revenge...

The Film
Not usually the sort of film I go for, but the hype earned it a viewing. The main thing I noticed was that it seemed too slow, like it was padded out, in order to be spread across two volumes. However, it took quite a while to establish characters, so perhaps the scenes couldn't easily be deleted. Also, the film took very brave steps - using anime for example, and the visual style is unique. It started off well, with the first fight, and also the setting of the scene with the Bride. Then after that, the hospital scene was also very good. But then it seemed to lack pace so much it came to a crawl, and left me wondering what the hype was all about. The 'Crazy 88' fight made me wonder what it was all about, I thought there weren't enough people, there's not 88 people there, only to find that the main scene I was watching the film for was about five minutes later than I expected.
The violence is explicit, and often over the top, but that probably should be expected from Tarantino. I also didn't particularly like the changing to black and white during the main fight, but I suppose it made the gore seem a little less. The main thing going for it from my point of view is that the characters were intriguing, and I actually cared about the Bride gaining her revenge.
All in all, not a bad film, but I was left hoping for more.
Film: A generous 7/10

The DVD
Very little, considering the hype. I'm sure they're waiting to package the two films together in a special edition. The documentary is more of a plug than anything else, and the music video I didn't like - the song annoyed me in the film, so it couldn't hope for anything else separately.
Disc: 4/10

Overall: 6/10
