Donnie Darko
Donnie Darko
October 1988 and small town USA is about to witness the end of the world. It's home to Donnie Darko, a brilliant but troubled teenager, plagued by terrifying visions which he alone knows the meaning of.

With his class mate and soul mate Gretchen and a mysterious ex teacher, nicknamed Grandma Death, he must unravel the strange occurrences affecting his school, his home and his life before a horrifying spectre known only as "Frank" leads Donnie to the edge of his sanity

The Film
Very weird. However, the film draws you into its world very well, considering how strange it is. Helped a lot by the well-chosen music, which brings back memories. Some great comedic moments also don't do any harm, although, as with Fight Club, some are so dark it's hardly noticable. It gives no clue what the end means, which means it's basically open to your own interpretation: no two people see the film in the same way. My only problem is that the end is so different from the rest of the film. I suppose that's what it intended, but a film regarding time travel as its main focus, to me, should have more than it does. Take Back to the Future, for example. Time travel is the main focus, and it is used all the way through. But I like the film anyway, and I can't really think of a way to improve it easily.

The DVD
In the UK there are now two different versions available: one with extras, with film-only. I would recommend the extras one, but only watch the extras after seeing the film at least twice, so you have your own interpretation. So you won't be fed an answer by the director, or whoever. The quality is pretty good, although picture should've been a little better, how they managed to get anamorphic lenses, but for the cost of the film, the quality is abuot as much as you can expect.
