Dark City
Dark City
John Murdock (Rufus Sewell) awakens alone in a strange hotel to find he is wanted for a series of brutal murders. His memories have vanished and even his beautiful wife, Emma (Jennifer Connelly) has become estranged from him. So begins a quest to unravel the mysteris of his past; a qquest that will take him into a fiendish underworld where he is relentlessly pursued by the police and a group of shadow-like beings known as the Strangers and where only the sinister Doctor Schreber (Keifter Sutherland) is able to help him...

The Film
Easily comparable to The Matrix. But this isn't quite as good. But it's definately ahead of the other similar releases of 1999 (eXistenZ, The Thirteenth Floor). One possible flaw is that too much is explained in the opening credits. This is perhaps true, although on watching for the first time, it definately helps. The plot moves extremely fast, yet never feels rushed - a problem The Matrix seems to have is that it becomes very slow on multiple viewings, as it's so keen to explain everything. Dark City also appears to explain most things, but in a much more enjoyable timeframe.

The DVD
Awful. From the distributers of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, this is appalling. Where's my extended edition of Dark City? A trailer and a "documentary" (read: lengthened trailer) is all the Region 2 release gets. If you're going to get it, make sure you buy the Region 1 version: many more extras, including a yak track.

Overall 9/10
