Blade 1 & 2

Blade
A blood-chilling, action-packed thriller about modern day vampires unlike any previously encountered. Wesley Snipes is BLADE, the ultimate vampire hunter, an immortal warrior who possesses the superhuman strength and cunning of a vampire but shares none of their weaknesses.
Able to walk by day and stalk by night, Blade must confront his ultimate adversary, the omnipotent vampire overlord Deacon Forst, Stephen Dorff, who is intent on leading an underground legion of vampires to conquer manking. Blade must use his awesome powers and razor-sharp weaponry like never before to prevent the annihilation of the entire human race

The Film
One of the first of the modern-style film, this sets the kind of tone films such as The Matrix and Minority Report followed - the visual style is so groundbreaking. An unforgettable opening fight scene that really lets you know what you're in for. The film does a great job of introducing Blade, as well as the other principle characters. Action is frantic, with some extraordinary special effects (for 1998). Acting is excellent, and dialogue presented well, despite a few cheesy lines. One of the best films of 1998, make sure you check it out.
Film: 8/10

The DVD
Very good quality video and sound, as you may have come to expect from DVD. Plenty of extras, almost enough to warrant a second disc. The best feature would have to be the (awful) alternate ending - as with Se7en, it makes you appreciate so much more the ending they chose.
Disc: 8/10

Overall: 8/10

Blade II
Exploding from the pages of Marvel Comics comes the thrilling follow-up to the hit 1998 film Blade. Blade (Wesley Snipes) is half man, half vampire and consumed by a desire to avenge the curse of his birth and save the human race from a blood-drenched Armageddon. In this newst action-packed adventure, Blade must align himself with a high-powered team of ampires to take on an even greater evil than either has ever faced - a new kind of super-vampire that is itself on a vicious hunt to eradicate both races.

The Film
A very good follow-up, although I can't help feeling it would've been done better with the original director, who seemed to take a more serious attitude. However, the main aim is entertainment, so perhaps it should be taken lightheartedly. The introduction of the Reapers needs new special effects, which are used extremely well. The fight scenes are built on, using bullet-time (remember me saying Blade set a tone for The Matrix?) in useful places, though mostly at the beginning. The character of Blade isn't added to much though, until right at the end, which is a bit disappointing. But who needs character development in a comic book hero film?
Film: 7/10

The DVD
Plenty to see on the second disc (in addition to commentaries). Best of all is the documentary on how the Reaper effects were created, which just looked disgusting, more so than the film.
