In everybody there is something which is
one’s own and which cannot be separated from them from birth to death and which is the only thing which helps one
to observe the real truth of one’s actions and observations. This is the ‘Self’
which is quite powerful and can help to
achieve whatever one needed at any time. The dictates of ‘Self’ and the directions given by ‘Self’ guide the path of
oneself to reach one’s goals. In various
Hindu literature this ‘Self’ is also designated as Brahman or Atma and it is
also the same as the ‘Self ‘ that exists in everybody and every where. Thus it
is part of an Universal Self which is infinity itself. Logically the characteristics of any part
are the same as of the whole, and the whole remains the same even if the part is taken out of it. Such
hypothesis may develop good explanation of Life and Nature but it is doubtful if any laboratory can ever
develop any experimental proof for the same as required by the modern man..
Thus philosophy and logic seem to be the only tools for any understanding of all the characteristics of ‘Self’. On an examination whether the
‘Self’ that exists in one person is the
same that exists in other persons like friends, relatives and even enemies, the
conclusion that it is the same is based on the assumption that at the time of
birth all are same, and the ‘Self’ is also born at the same time and it will
cease to exist in the person only after one’s death. It is basically a very pure entity not being able to be corrupted
or adulterated and does not apparently interfere with the emotional
consequences of human body and its physical existence as these are controlled
by the chemistry of body structure, hormones etc. But what type of ‘Self’ exists
in other living beings or even in
inanimate objects, if the whole Creation is supposed to be filled with the
infinite Universal Self? This is a question that baffles many a common man. If
it is accepted that Creator and Creation are one and the same and
inter-convertible as per some theories of Hinduism, then the theory of
re-incarnation exists and the theory of Universal Self can also be sustained to
a large extent
