Handling Rabbits

You must handle your rabbit carefully, especially when picking him up or holding him. If a rabbit feels unstable or scared when being held, he may bite, scratch, nip, or kick out at you. This can cause injury or fracture to his back, especially if he kicks out hard. This is why it is important to pick up a rabbit the right way.

There are to ways to properly pick up your rabbit. The first way is to start by petting him, then take one hand and grab the scruff and and the other hand to support his back legs. hold the head higher than the rest of the body. Now move the hand holding the scruff to under his chest and carry the rabbit in front of you.

The other safe method is to simply pick the rabbit up and cradle him against your body, with your arms tp provide support underneath and on the side so he cannot jump. If your rabbit is nervous, anxious, or jumpy, you might want to wrap him up in a towel first before picking him up. But, remember not to keep him wrapped up for too long or heat stress may develop.
