Clipping Toenails

You must clip your rabbit’s toe nails when they become too long to prevent injuries to you or others. You can buy special rabbit or cat nail clippers at a pet store, but most people use regular toenail clippers for humans. That is what I use. When first clipping your rabbit’s nails, it is best to have an assistant to help you. Some rabbits are really jittery (like mine) when you try to hold them in a certain position. If your rabbit will bite or scratch, you can hold him in a towel while you clip him, but if he is ok with it, hold him in your lap, his head resting on your knees, and clip his back feet and front feet. This is only one way to do it that works best for me. Clip each nail above the quick. The quick in the red part low in the nail. It is usually hard to see if your rabbit has dark colored nails. If you cut the nail too short, it will bleed, but it doesn’t hurt the rabbit too much. You can buy something for that at a pet store that stops the bleeding. If you are uncomfortable doing this, you can ask your veterinarian, groomer, or pet shop worker to help you. With some practice you’ll learn how to do it easily!
