Alberta Society of Pipers and Drummers

Newsletter

Fall, 2001

Well, everybody has put their competitions and parades behind them for another season. It was a busy and successful summer for all.

The ASPD executive and Highland Games Steering Committee have even managed to meet several times over the summer. As of the date of printing, the rules have been drafted, but not finalized. Final ratification will be held at the December 2, 2001 meeting at the Holiday Inn in Red Deer. The draft rules and music requirements will be posted on the web site shortly, if they aren't already. Please ensure that everybody gets a copy. If you require a hard copy, please let us know and we will send you one.

The 2001 season was the last year for the Steering Committee to determine the Provincial standings. Starting immediately, the ASPD will be compiling and publishing the aggregate scores which will be used to determine the Provincial Championships. There will be recognition of indoor competitions as well, but we haven't ironed out all the details in that regard yet. Remember that there will be an Awards Banquet next October or November to hand out the prizes, so plan on being there. We of Scottish influence do like a good celeidh, and we are planning a good one. If you have some suggestions, or would like to help in the planning, contact us via the mailbox or the web site.

October 11, 2001 was the one-month anniversary of the terrorist attacks on America. The Alliance of North American Pipe Band Associations (ANAPBA) had asked that all pipers and drummers in North America play their instruments at 12 noon (in their respective time zone). In Edmonton, there was a gathering of 50 musicians on the Legislature grounds. There was also a gathering at the University of Lethbridge and in Calgary. We haven't heard of any other gatherings, but if you did participate (either in a group or alone), please let us know, or register your name on the ANAPBA website. As it turned out, musicians from all over the world participated. Many from Europe, Africa, Australia/New Zealand, and Mexico also showed their support by playing.

WANTED: Someone with publishing experience to help produce this newsletter and possibly even selling (?) advertising space. If you don't have experience, enthusiasm will work. Please contact me through the web site or by the mailbox.

15 WAYS TO KNOW YOU HAVE BEEN IN A PIPE BAND WAY TOO LONG:

15. You actually like marching in parades and would kill to do it all year long.
14. The drummers are starting to make sense to you.
13. You wonder what life would be like if you weren't in the band.
12.You start seriously listening to the cartoon music backgrounds because one, kinda, sounded like pipes ... once... you think... pretty sure anyway.
11. You start screaming "LEFT...LEFT...LEFT? at people who are walking in front of you.
10. You think "band humour' jokes are funny.
9. The drummers are starting to make sense to you.
8. Now that you've dated everyone in the band, you fear you will never date again.
7. You think Pipe Majors have a right to be egotistical.
6. You think side drummers have a slight attitude problem.
5. You hum tunes and sets that match your walking speed.
4. You used to play a pretty mean bass guitar and switched to bagpipes for the chicks.
3.You get into heated, even bitter discussions over whether that 32nd note in the 12th part of the tune, no one can play anyway, should be a G or a C.
2. The drummers are starting to make sense to you.

And finally, the number one sign that you've been in a pipe band waaaaay too long ....

1. You've read more than three of these and said to yourself "Well, what's wrong with that?"

LOST PIPES

An advertisement in the Toronto Star recently reports the loss of a set of pipes, which occurred on Saturday, September 22, 2001. They were left in the trunk of a taxi cab which was hailed in the Pape/Danforth area, that dropped the owner off near High Park in Toronto. To date, extensive inquiries have not shed any light on the whereabouts of these pipes.

The owner is Fraser Clark, ex-48 Highlanders piper, and the missing pipes are silver and ivory Hardies with a Naill chanter. They have a green velveteen bag cover with gold trim, and were in a mid-blue canvas hold-all.

Please keep an eye open for these pipes, and contact Fraser Clark at (905) 873-6342, should you hear anything concerning them.

HIGHER EDUCATION

The University of Prince Edward Island has announced a Bachelor of Arts degree program with a Major in Highland Bagpiping. UPEI will be the first university in Canada and third in the world to offer such a degree. To be admitted to the program, students must successfully audition at the level equivalent to the Institute of Piping's Senior Certificate.

For details, contact Scott MacAulay at: [email protected] or 1-902-436-5377(w), or Marion Hanaford, UPEI Assoc. Registrar at: [email protected] or at 1-902-566-0361.

STEWARDING

The society is proposing a Stewarding course for early spring. The Highland Games Steering Committee is 200% behind this initiative. This course will certify Stewards in the requirements of the Committee and the Society to ensure consistency throught the province. Details will follow.

COMPETITION RESULTS

Well, here is what we were all waiting for. the results of the competitions. Please note that Fort Edmonton is not a registered event, so the results from that day are not included. If you have any questions regarding the standings, please contact the registrar.

MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL

Membership renewals will be due January 1, 2002 and must be paid before the Annual General Meeting inMarch or April. This will allow us to compile the list of active members for consultation with the Highland Games. As you all know, if you aren't a member of the ASPD or an organization affiliated with ANAPBA, you won't be competing in Alberta in 2002. Renewal forms will be sent with the Winter newsletter, or can be pulled off of the website.
