Spring 2002 Newsletter

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
The AGM was held April 14/02 in Red Deer and was fairly well attended. We accomplished quite a bit in 2 ½ hours.

Motions approved at the AGM include:
1. The membership year was amended to begin in October to accommodate the indoor events held by other ANAPBA associations and to allow for the possibility of creating an indoor season in Alberta.
2. Membership numbers will be the same each year with the exception of a year code prefix.
3. Challenging up a grade will be eliminated commencing the 2003 season.
4. A membership category has been created for indoor games (solo to mini-band events only). The cost of the membership is $25/day. The games must be run in compliance with ASPD rules for membership events and judging. Results provided to ASPD will be used to calculate an indoor season aggregate score.
5. Advertising was approved for the newsletter at the cost per issue of $15 for a business card sized add and $30 for 4 ¼" X 5 ½" (quarter page).

Three executive positions were available for election. Ross Barker was elected as Vice President by acclamation. The Treasurer and Secretary positions received no nominations so remained vacant. (Since the meeting, there have been volunteers for those positions)

WEB PAGE
We would like to welcome Dan Lidgren as our new webmaster and extend our thanks to our retiring webmaster, David Kaminski. Dan has already made a bunch of changes so be sure to take a look. While you are checking this out, note that there is now a list of the members (so the games can confirm your membership before accepting your entry), an instructor list, a judging list and a list of persons and bands for hire. Only ASPD members are eligible to have their name listed on these pages. Reviews will be done annually to remove names of those that have not renewed their membership. Judges must meet the criteria established by the Judging Committee prior to being listed.

As a result of the increase in cyber-stalking, we encourage all ASPD members to exercise caution when accepting any invitation to play. It is a good idea to research the event and the contact, as well as traveling to the event with a companion. It doesn't hurt to be too careful.

RULE CHANGES FOR 2002
The rules under which ASPD operates have been ratified and are in place for this year. The rules outline the responsibilities of the competitors, judges, stewards, games and the ASPD. They define dress code (note dress code for chanter and drum pad events), music requirements, grading and acceptable behavior.

Those participating in fanfare and quartet events must have individual memberships.

As this is a self-regulated organization, we rely on you, the membership, to report infractions to the ASPD representative at the games. Check out the rules for details on the procedure.

IN MEMORIAM
The ASPD sends it's sincerest condolences to the family of Rick Shiells. Rick, who was an avid supporter of the Ogden Legion Pipe Band, passed away recently. His involvement and enthusiasm will be sadly missed.

NEWSLETTER
The newsletter editor position is available immediately. Although the job is challenging at times, there are benefits. One is that as the editor, you receive issues of all the ANAPBA newsletters or magazines. Copies of "Piper & Drummer" out of Ontario and "The Voice" out of Eastern US are well worth your effort. Also, you may be eligible to represent ASPD at the ANAPBA Summit in Atlanta next January. If you are interested in taking up this role, please let us know.

NOTE
Remember that the ASPD is your organization. We require your input and involvement. Please share this newsletter with members of your band or lesson group that may not be members.
