Chronology of Saint Anthony







 1191         Birth in Lisbon, (Kingdom of) Portugal. Baptismal name: Ferdinand (Bulhoes).

 1210         Joined Canons Regular of Saint Augustine at Sao Vicente.

 1212         Transfered to the Monastery of Holy Cross in Coimbra.

 1220         Ordained a priest in Coimbra.

 1220         Joined Friars Minor at Olivais, took religious name of Anthony, after Saint Anthony
                  of the Desert.

 1220         Began missionary expedition to Morocco in hopes of becoming a martyr, became
                  extremely ill, returned towards Portugal, but ship went off course and landed in Sicily.

 1221         Attended the General Chapter of the Friars Minor at Assisi, Italy.

 1221         Assigned to the hermitage at Monte Paola.

 1222         Attended the Ordination of Forli, where he first preached to his Friars Minor brothers.

 1222         Assigned the Office of Preacher in the Province of Romagna.

 1224         Received letter from Saint Francis giving permission to teach theology to the brothers.

 1224         Began mission to preach in France (The Cathar heresy).

 1226         Named the Custos (superior of a group of friaries) of Limoges.

 1227         Attended General Chapter, and chosen to be the Minister Provincial of Romagna.

 1228-29    Wrote The Sunday Sermons.

 1229         Taught theology to the friars in Padua.

 1230         Preached before Pope Gregory IX, who would declare him, "Ark of the Testament."

 1230         Resigned his position as Minister Provincial.

 1231         Preached daily to large crowds during Lent in Padua.

 1231         Died, Friday, June 13th at the Poor Clare Monastery in Arcella.

 1231         Buried, Tuesday, June 17th at the Church of Mary, Holy Mother of God, in Padua.

 1232         Canonized, Sunday, May 30th by Pope Gregory IX in the cathedral of Spoleto,
                   less than one year after his death.

 1263         Saint Bonaventure presides over the transfer of the remains (first examination)
                  to the new basilica built in his honor. Saint Anthony's tongue is found incorrupt.

 1946         Pope Pius XII declares Saint Anthony a Doctor of the Church, with the title,
                  "Doctor of the Gospel."

 1981         A second examination is performed in January, with Saint Anthony's vocal
                  chords being found intact (recognizable).
