The Bhaktivedanta Academy’s staff are presently engaged in:

Relocating and redeveloping the Academy’s campus on land that is being raised above Mayapur’s highest recorded flood levels. The campus is being designed according to principles of Vastu sastra (the Vedic science of spacial orientation) and will be surrounded by informal gardens laid out according to principles of Vrksa Ayurveda. Developing a complete, integrated twenty-year (primary, secondary and tertiary) Vaisnava/Vedic curriculum.

Inaugurating Bhaktisastri-visarada and Bhaktyanucana classes in September 2004. Running a pilot program for the Yajna Varaha Vidyaksetra, inaugurated in February 2002. The program presently has eight students at primary level. Affiliating the Bhaktivedanta Academy with the Bhaktivedanta College, an Internet college based in North Carolina, USA, that will translate all Bhaktivedanta Academy degrees into degrees recognized by the State Government of North Carolina. For example, the Bhaktisarvabhauma degree will automatically translate into a Ph.D. in Vedic philosophy and culture from the Bhaktivedanta College.

Dearest Vaisnavas,

Please accept my humble obeisances.  All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

1)      Regarding Gatto's book, please be advised that the entire book can be read online at www.johntaylorgatto.com

I have taken the liberty of downloading the entire text and formatting it into a Microsoft Word document.  Those who are interested in saving the $60+ cost of purchasing and shipping the book, please e-mail me and I will be happy to send you the book as an attached file.  Much as Srila Prbahupada took great care to undermine our artificial faith in the modern

scientific method of material absorption but also gave us Krsna and the Vaisnavas as positive alternatives,

Gatto provides a sound foundation of scholarly research which not only necessarily obliterates our existing faith in the artificially imposed and unecessary system of modern American education, he also gives us positive, viable, practical alternatives

to secure the future of our children's lives.  In so much as the children of the Hare Krsna movement are the future of ISKCON and a domineering force in the development and evolution of world Vaisnavism and the establishment of Vedic cultural principles as a method of real life (both of which will be established by the method in which they become educated), this book is, undoubtedly, one of the most important works on education of the 20th century.

Along with Sri Prahlada Prabhu, principal headmaster of the Sri Rupanauga Paramthika Vidyapitha (the Mayapura Boys gurukula also generally known as the "Bhaktivedanta Academy"), I coordinate VEDICEF Corp., the "Vedic Culture and Education Foundation", a non-profit, private financial organization dedicated to facilitating Vedic educational initiatives

worldwide.  We are currently in our fund generation phase, attempting to build a sizeable economic base of serious seed investors and supporters such that we may begin philanthropic outreach to qualifying institutions and individuals in the near future.  We are also currently supporting the Mayapura gurukula. Our website, www.vedicef.com, is forthcoming.  To get

involved or for more information, please contact me and I will send you our Prospectus and Welcome Package.

Hare Krsna.

homeschooling

Radha Ramana Prabhu (Ravi Gupta) has obtained his Phd from Oxford and

is the youngest person in Oxford's long history to do so (info from

Braj Bihari Prabhu).

School children are usually bored for much of the school day. I

suspect the whole "cool" thing has much to do with that. What else do

they have to do to entertain themselves during their confinement? "An

idle mind is the devil's work."

This actually reminds me of a movie I saw once about a bunch of

Scottish soldiers in a Japanese POW camp in WWII. Some of them

started their own "school" and "church." Those that participated

found it much easier to avoid the shocking degredation the non-

participants usually succumbed to. People need to feel valuable

through engagements and/or relationships. They need a sense of

purpose. Without these things, people become more and more degraded,

to the point where they become animals, or worse.

To this day, I still have times where I wonder if existence itself

has any significant purpose, and therefore value. Wow! This

connection just gave me a new perspective on my own difficulties in

life! THAT'S "cool!"

As for why I choose homeschooling, my husband's and my own

experiences don't leave any other option, really. But I think I would

like to homeschool even if that wasn't the case. I like the idea of

following your own interests and potentials, and not having all the

bad influences.

As for my experiences in school, I remember having to push my teachers to put me in more advanced groups. The general response I remember was that if I couldn't already do what they were currently just learning, then I couldn't be moved to that group. I always thought that was the dumbest reasoning I had ever heard, but how could I, a child, tell my teachers that their logic was flawed? I was too busy trying to find a way to save my self-esteem.

Trends

Modern developments in neuroscience, artificial intelligence, psychology, quantum physics, cognitive science and philosophy have catapulted the interdisciplinary field of consciousness studies within mainstream science in this decade. The exponential growth of books, conferences, research papers and journals dedicated to the topic of consciousness suggests that this new field is here to stay.

The Program

The multi-disciplinary M.S. /Ph.D. program offers a unique opportunity to specialize in the expanding field of consciousness studies. Comparable in content to interdisciplinary cognitive science degree programs now developing in many Western universities, the program covers the wide range of work to be found in this important new field, including the latest experimental findings, theoretical models and research paradigms.

Duration

The M.S. program is of two years duration, consisting of four semesters (three semesters of course work and one semester of dissertation).

The Ph.D. program requires the M.S. degree in consciousness studies for admission. One year after admission, the Ph.D. candidate will be required to appear for a qualifying examination. Upon successfully taking it, the student can expect to take a minimum of two years to complete the full dissertation.

Both M.S. and Ph.D. programs require full-time residence at the Bhaktivedanta Institute in Bombay. The programs cannot be done by correspondence or online, at present.

The Movers

The Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani (BITS), is an all-India Institute for higher education and is a deemed University since 1964. One of India's top technical schools, BITS has acquired the reputation of a highly purposive, innovative university, often setting the pace for workable reforms in higher education suitable and relevant to the national context. The Institute operates three tiers of education, namely, the Integrated First Degree Programs, Higher Degree Programs and Doctoral Programs. An important aspect of education at BITS is its institutionalized linkages with the world of work. The Institute attaches great importance to the University-Industry Linkage and gives a mutually reinforcing thrust to it through various avenues — Practice School, M.E. (Collab.) and off-campus Distance Learning and Collaborative Programs. In response to the requirements of the manpower training and development in industries, the Institute has been running the Distance Learning Programs in the area of Science & Technology since 1988.

The Bhaktivedanta Institute, Mumbai (B.I.) is a research and educational Institute, with centers in Bombay and San Francisco. The Institute promotes consciousness-related research and study within mainstream scientific disciplines. It organized the First International Conference on the Study of Consciousness Within Science in 1990 in San Francisco. Fourteen invited speakers, including three Nobel Laureates, presented papers in the two-day conference. A monthly colloquium on Consciousness and Science, started in the Bay Area after the conference, has entered its seventh continuous year. The institute's in-house research spans a number of areas including foundations of quantum mechanics, artificial intelligence, origins of life, philosophy of science, and East/West comparative philosophy. As part of its program to interact with academics from leading universities and research establishments, the institute offers short / long-term research fellowships. Plans for expansion in the near future include setting up a biofeedback laboratory and the starting of an international journal for consciousness studies.
