MANTLES
The MANTLES, was named from the French word Manteu, ansd
served as a protection (being spread over and pendant from the helmet) to repel the
extremity of wet, cold, and heat and withal opreserve the accountrements from rust.
Guillim thus continues Mantles, like other habits , have not escaped transformation, but
have passed through the forge of fanatical conceit, in so much as (beside the bare name)
there remaineth neither shape nor shadow of a mantle. But as they asre used in
achievements, whether you all them mantles or flourishings, they are evermore said in
blazon to be doubled, that is, lined throughout with some one of the furs.
The mantle is sometimes termed a Lambrequin or Lamequin. the numerous strips and cuts into
which it is usually divided, are supposed to indecate that it has been thus torn and
hacked in the battle, and betokened a certain evidence of prowess.
