CANOEING & KAYAKING FANS
REVIEWS OF CANOEING LOCATIONS

John Dickensen Park, Jupiter, Florida:

Well, this one was really good, it takes around 4 hours for a round trip. I came across an alligator, like 10 yards. It was a 6 footer, did not look harmful. As far as you did not bother him. Scenery was beautiful. Wilds... After rowing for 2 hours there is a camping site, where you can have a little picnic. Bring your food like snacks, drinks and sandwiches.

This camping site was really interesting though. A man named Trapper Nelson has found this location around 1930's. Only means of reaching the location is by canoeing. Trapper has chosen to live a life in this camping ground, where he had a couple of Indian friends. Trapper's cottage (shed?) was reserved very well. Even restroom facility. Like Robinson and Friday. If you visit you might wanna ask a couple of questions to rangers about Trapper's life. Like how he passed away, they don't want to write info like that on the boards.

Current is light. It is a must see. Many canoers around.  Also, many deer around. Beautiful creatures. Drive slowly, deer crossing !!!

Review by John September 2000 :

Trapper Nelson lived out there and hunted, fished and trapped for furs, brought them into town and sold them.  Over time, he bought more and more land somehow and eventually was convinced by a Park Ranger to put it into his will to leave the land to the State for a park.  Shortly there after he killed himself.

It is an interesting place.  He led tourists in fishing and hunting expeditions and he even built his own zoo with animals he caught. He also built a water tower so he had running water/plumbing from the rrain water he collected.  North of Trapper Nelson's the current strenghtens considerably, but is worth the extra exploration.  Saw a nice pilleated woodpecker there.

Thanks for the review John...
