*** CHAPTER 03 : HELIX ***

"Professor Reyes?!" Giga yelped taking a leap back and out the door. Reyes glanced up from the large book he was reading, looked at her through thick round glasses and paled to a sickly white. Her look wasn't much better as she gripped tightly onto the collar of her green hospital gown.

"Giga Prime?"

She gulped and stepped forwards a bit to remove her hands from the front of her gown to place them on the door frame. Professor Reyes stumbled out of the blankets and sat up to look her in the eyes. "I wasn't aware anyone survived the explosion..." He began. A blue eyebrow rose precariously high as he continued. "When I woke up the doctors said I was the only survivor."

"I was under a similar impression." She countered still unmoving from her spot near the hallway. "They said CRACKED had been killed. All except one survivor..." She set her eyes on him as they became locked in a death-stare. He was unfazed by her brilliant golden eyes with the tiny black microchip lines running through them.

"How did you survive?" She asked finally. "I'd been told everyone was dead, but you, well... here you are..."

"Just lucky I guess." He smiled and shrugged. Slowly the other eyebrow rose on her forehead and she nodded.

"Lucky indeed." She repeated then, quicker than he could see she dropped her hands. Taking a few steps into the room she asked another question. "Professor, what happened down there?" She set herself down on the bed. "D.A.V.E says an explosion?"

"They'd be right." She nodded, pursing her lips. "But, as to how... I don't really have any idea. One moment I'm creating a new battle simulation program with Rosa; the next I'm being flung 20 feet to land near Stephen's post..." He sighed. "I glad you survived."

 "I'm sure."

"You still don't really like me, do you?"

 "Does it show?"

"It was a bad idea to give you emotions." He frowned.

She deadpanned. "Probably was." Closing her eyes, Giga laid back with her hands behind her head. "But its a decision you'll just have to live with the consequences for." He flinched. "I'm going to bed." She stated, liking the sound of it. Bed, all by herself, no one watching her as she floated lifelessly in that blue goop.

"How?" He asked pulling her from her thoughts.

 "Excuse me?"

"I asked how. You aren't going to be able to regenerate, you aren't in the cycle or the chamber. How can you sleep?" She stiffened and sat up turning her face to him.

"How can I?" She asked glancing down at her hands. She turned them upwards and sighed allowing herself to see what she'd kept hidden from D.A.V.E; on each palm a small implant was embedded so that it only protruded a bit. I was round and silver and used to circulate the blue liquid of her regeneration chamber into her body. The liquid purged her cybernetics of defects, regenerated her systems like a good night of rest, and healed wounds and imperfections. Because she wasn't human, she had no need to sleep, and the chamber took care of hunger and everything else as well.

"What am I going to do?" She asked aloud. "People are going to realize I'm not human when they see I don't stop to eat or sleep..."

Reyes shook his head. "Actually, You are going to have to eat sooner or later." She stared blankly at him. "I know the chamber took care of allowing you systems to produce nutrients without oral consumption, however now that you no longer have that option I suppose you'll have to eat."

"I suppose that goes with sleep to?" She asked.

"No. You weren't created to sleep."

 "I see."

 "It's interesting isn't it?"

"No, not in the least." She frowned. "What do I do about sleeping then?"

"I'll think of something. For now though, you get to wander the halls." He settled back and rolled over. "Good night Giga Prime." He clicked off his light emerging the room in dark and making Giga's eyes glow a bit.

"Yeah whatever." she rolled off her bed and pulled her hospital gown closed again. She searched for her slippers she slipped them on and padded out of her room and down the hallway. Only to run into a nurse.

"Hi there." The incredibly large, and possibly German woman said. Giga gulped. "You aren't supposed to be up this late ja?" She continued.

 "Uh... yeah?"

"Don't you think you should go back to your room?" She asked. "So you can sleep?"

"I wasn't sleeping to begin with..."

 "Don't get snippy with me!"

"But I wasn't!" Giga whined. "I don't know how to sleep!"

The German nurse puffed out her chest and rose to her full height of 6 feet completely shadowing poor Giga who stood only five feet at best. She froze and stared in horror at the rising figure of her opponent.

"If you don't stop snapping back at me little missy, I'll personally carry you back to your room!!"

Giga stood quite pale and quite still. "I'll be good." She squeaked.

"Good. Now, why aren't you sleeping?"

"I CAN'T!" She cried out in exasperation.

"That's it!" The nurse bellowed and Giga had just enough time to read 'Helga' on her name-tag before was scooped up, thrown over a very beefy shoulder, and escorted back to her room. It wasn't until later she realized she'd never even said where her room was.

Never the less, Giga found herself sitting quite still on her bed while Reyes laughed his way to a coughing fit. Her expression was strangely calm as he doubled over and hacked.

"I hardly think it was that funny professor."

 "I do!" He choked.

"I noticed..." She didn't move, and her expression never changed. "She practically snapped my spine in three!"

"You were built stronger than that!" He stated huffily.

"I know. It was my (obviously very poor) attempt at a joke." She answered settling back on her bed. Reyes nodded.

"Sorry." He said. "However, I need sleep. If you decide to go out again, try not to run into 'Helga' OK?"

"Yeah yeah..." She waved a hand and gingerly walked out to the hallway and snuck away.

Mariah skidded to a halt in front of the main glass door of the Galani Prime Metropolitan Police station. The office stood 62 floors high all with a department in law enforcement on each floor. D.A.V.E itself was situated on the 53rd floor. The chief was located on the 62nd floor so as to watch over all his minions. He was a stickler for coming in late and Mariah was pushing the envelope again. She calmly pushed aside a strand of curly hair and straightened her sweater before she walked through the sliding doors.

Inside, she reported to the front desk and then a beeline to the elevators. There she ran into an even more dishevelled than usual Toki. He turned to her and lifted a hand in greeting. He looked over her shoulder then back to her and smiled.

 "Good morning Mariah."

"What are ya'll doing here Toki sugah?" she asked as they entered the elevator. "Ah had thought you got the day off."

"So did I." He replied. "However, it seems there's been another murder. The Chiharra are being targetted as the main suspect again. The chief wants my opinion and therefore called me in on my day off so I can sit in a chair and listen to him bitch and complain about how I don't anything."

Mariah started to laugh, then realized he was being serious and covered by coughing. "Ah heard Saka and Daphne had been sent to pick up Giga at the hospital." He nodded.

"Yeah, Saka's expression was priceless." A strand of hair flopped out of his haphazard ponytail and onto his face but he ignored and continued. "He seems to be the only one that hasn't been dazzled by our mystery woman."

The elevator stopped and the doors slid open. Before they moved to get off Mariah tucked the strand of hair behind his ear. "Good
Luck sugah." She smiled sadly.

"Thanks." They seperated and went their ways. Toki walked down the hallway to the private elevator it seems the chief deemed necessary to have. The trip was short and soon he found himself in front of a large door with the words CHIEF in large bold letters printed on it.

He raised a hand to press the call button when the door opened and he was greeted by the large green eyes of Akiko Mya.

"Good morning Toki Himura." She stated, emotionless as usual.

"That, My dear. Is a highly debatable statement." He countered and sat down. "Where's the chief?"

"Getting his morning coffee." She shrugged. Toki sighed. "He will be arriving in a few moments."

"In the mean time?" Toki asked carefully.

"In the mean time I'm to brief you of the details surrounding your latest case."She reached over and tapped a button on the desk which produced a giant floating screen. "It seems the next victim is a member of a branch of the GMPD itself. His name was Bryant Collins and he'd been stationed to look in the ruins of the CRACKED lab."

"First a scientist, now an officer. And I'll bet the chief is sure its the Chiharra agian and that's why I'm here."

"As it is, the murder was exceptionally cruel. However, not like the last. It seems," She tapped at the panel and it phased into rather disgusting pictures of the victim. "He was actually skinned alive and then had his insides eaten."

Toki was turning a very unpleasant shade of green by the time she stopped explaining the gruesome details. He raised a hand in a plea for her to stop. She paused while he collected himself. As he gulped back whatever he'd eaten for breakfast the chief plowed through his door and slumped into his chair.

"Morning Himura." He snapped. Toki nodded. Akiko took up her usual position behind the chief looking over his shoulder. "Judging by the look on your face I'll bet you've seen the latest reports."

 "Yes sir."

"We need to get out there and figure out why these attacks are happening and who's behind them." He stated taking a long gulp of coffee. "I want you to get that girl you've talking about -"

 "Giga sir."

"Yes, her. I want you to bring her in. We need her expertise in this matter."

Toki frowned. "Sir, she doesn't have any intention of joining D.A.V.E. In fact I'm willing to guess she's going to give Saka and Daphne a hard time about just picking her up."

"I don't care. Bring her in. We'll get her settled in and she'll never want to leave."

 "sir -"

"No, I don't want to hear it Akiko! She's needed here. So do as I'm ordering and bring her here!"

"Yes sir." Toki said and stood stiffly and walked out the door.

It was finally leaving time and Giga had returned to her room to gather her belongings, which weren't much. She avoided Reyes and changed into her regular outfit. It was a sleek black leather catsuit that seems to be very shoddily sewn together as white stitches could be seen everywhere. On it she wore several brown belts, one across her chest with two others just beneth that one, and two more on her right thigh.

She gathered the rest of her stuff and trotted down the hallway. There she came faced with a med team dragging along a stretcher. Being a curious person, she bent over and snuck a look at the bed on wheels. She nearly choked as she saw what was on it.

Lying in pieces was the body of a friend. Her hair white, and her eyes red. Giga sniffled. "Helix?" Came her hestitant question. One of the medics lifted their head and gave Giga a questioning glance.

"Do you know this thing?" He asked.

"Yes I know her." Giga snapped. "What happened to her?

"Far as we know D.A.V.E took a chunk out of it and then that cat-girl finished the job."

Her voice was dead as she glanced placidly downwards. "I see." she carefully lifted the severed hand of her friend and stroked it softly. "Helix?" She whispered. The med team glanced at each other and then slowly and quietly left.

The android did not move but Giga continued to speak softly. "Helix, I know you can hear me." Then, suddenly the woman's eyes blinked open. Giga let out a laugh which sounded strangled.

 "Helix?"

"Quit saying my name Giga Prime. I know what it is." The severed head snorted.

"Sorry." She apologized and set the hand down. Its fingers twitched once and then lay silent. "Oh, Helix... what happened?? They said D.A.V.E gave you a beating. But I know you couldn't be beaten by them."

"True. I had already been in a previous fight."

"With who?" Giga asked placing her hands on the edge of the stretcher. "Who could do that to you?"

 "It was ... it- was..."

"No... don't leave Helix..." she pleaded. "It was who?"

"It was..." But she never finished the sentence as her eyes closed for the final time.

"Good bye, dear friend..." Giga let the woman completely shut down and then sat down on the floor and placed her head in her hands.

**

Saka burst through the hospital doors as Daphne scurried in after him on all fours. "Oh... slow down!" She yelled after him. He didn't. Saka couldn't believe of all people he'd been the one to be chosen to pick up this... this monster. This threat of all things normal. He hated this Giga Prime. She wasn't real, she didn't even exist! But she'll become an officer sooner than anyone on the force, she didn't have to train, didn't have to endure all the torture he had...

Daphne finally caught up and tackled him to the ground hissing. He glared coldly at her as she sat on his chest and licked her paw.

"We get Giga together, what part didn't you understand?" Her eyes narrowed. "You didn't really think I'd fall for the 'stay in the car' trick did you? I mean, I just know you were coming in here to tell Giga to get lost and then say she ran away..." She pinned every thought Saka had exactly. And she knew it.

"Get off me Daphne." He said in a dangerous voice which was totally ignored. People were starting to stare. Good thing Daphne could care less. Meanwhile Saka had turned a rather interesting shade of red whether in anger or embarrassment it was hard to tell. Finally he sat up and dumped the cat woman right off onto the floor roughly. Standing back up he brushed off the red uniform jacket he wore and walked down the hallway. Once again Daphne tagged along behind.

"Where are we going?" She asked searching the halls. He ignored her. "Where are we going Saka? Where huh huh?? I wanna know! Which room is Giga's?" She was being annoying on purpose, and it was working. Saka's jaw set and he stared straight ahead.

Daphne opened her mouth to speak and stopped. Sitting on one of the hard plastic chairs lining the hallway was Giga looking particularly glum. Sitting cross-legged she had her face in her hands and was staring off at some random spot on the wall. Saka took no notice and charged right up and stared at her.

"What?" She muttered turning her face away.

"I have orders to bring you to HQ." Saka answered gruffly.

 "I'm not going."

 "Yes you are."

 "No I'm not."

 "Yes -"

"NO!" She reacted suddenly and stood up. "I'm not going to be part of ANYTHING that takes life, no matter what kind-for granted!" Her eyes gave an eerie glow as she stared at Saka; who was completely unfazed.

"I have orders." He said again and grabbed her wrist.

Giga wrenched it away and turned her back. Saka sighed and grabbed it again; this time he found himself on the ground. She had flipped him single handedly. Daphne snickered.

"Please come with us Ms.Prime." She pleaded. "We need you! D.A.V.E is getting its butt kicked by the viruses! We need all the fire-power we can get!" Giga narrowed her eyes.

"You must be the cat that destroyed Helix." She stated. Daphne blinked. "You know her, the albino android? My only true friend in that godforsaken hellhole of a laboratory. She was the closest thing I had to a sister."

 "She attacked us!" Daphne explained.

"You didn't need to kill her!"

"You can't kill an android!" Saka exclaimed and finally carried her sack style and protesting; over his shoulder and out the door.

"Look, I'm sorry but I have orders. I don't want you here anymore than you want to be! In fact; if the orders hadn't come directly from the chief; you'd still be in that stasis tube! So shut the hell up!"

Giga quieted herself and relaxed her body a bit, but not her will. It would take a miracle for them to convince her to join D.A.V.E....
