Little Egret

Egretta garzetta

Little Egrets are a common sight in river shallows and ponds. Occasionally one will see them away from water, in lawns and meadows. They have an active hunting style, taking long deliberate steps, neck outstretched and ready for a quick stab at prey. In Bangalore, I saw one track dragonflies with slow head movements and then catch one with a sudden snap.

They are distinguished by their black legs and beak, yellow on the feet, and aigrettes on back, breast and head in the breeding season.

Usually found singly.
