Blacknecked Grebe

Podiceps nigricollis

In May 2000, I saw a large group of Ruddy Shelducks, Lesser Whistling Teals and Avocets on the Ganga in Allahabad. There was also a small group of Grebes which I took to be all Dabchicks and did not pay much attention. The photos below, however, suggest that some were Black-necked Grebes. In the photo on the left, note that some Grebes are noticeably leaner and longer necked than the others. And in the photo on the right, the nearest Grebe has white on the trailing edge of the wing.
