What's the green dot on my shifter?

Ford had a better idea in the mid-1960s: The C4 automatic tranmissions in the early Mustangs start in 2nd gear when the transmission is shifted to the the normal Drive position, which Ford indicated by a big white dot instead of the usual D.

If you want to start out in 1st gear, position the shifter at the green dot (2nd position).

Ford abandoned this scheme in the 1967 model year, but occasionally a later-model bezel (the chrome piece that holds the shift lever to the floor) will be matched to an earlier model transmission, or the valve body in the transmission itself may have been changed.
