The consensus seems to be, go for it. But keep in mind a couple of things:
Check the direction of spin on the new alternator; be sure it goes the same way as your pulley's rotation. Late model alternators may spin in the opposite direction.
Also, newer alternators are lighter in weight and may get hotter during operation, which may increase your overall engine temperature.
