Alternator/generator---what's the difference?

Alternator is just another name for a generator that produces alternating current (AC). However, in order to charge your battery, the electrical system must first convert the AC to the direct current (DC) required. Early automotive generators (as used in 1964 1/2 Mustangs) produced DC naturally, no conversion necessary.

But alternators are more reliable and produce more power, and they have replaced DC generators as the automotive standard electrical supplier.

For more information about how an alternator works, see the Mr. Fixit website. For a more in-depth look at your car's entire electrical system, see the AutoSite website.
