On a 1965 Mustang, the headlight and windshield wiper switches are removed in different ways:
Once the knob is out, you will see a cross pattern inside the bezel. Use a large screw driver to turn the bezel counterclockwise. Removal of the bezel will release the switch housing from the dash.
To remove the windshield wiper switch, loosen the set screw which holds the knob onto the shaft. Unlike the headlight switch, the shaft remains in the switch. With the knob off, you will need to use something like a pair of needlenose pliers to loosen the bezel (the shaft is in the way, preventing use of a screwdriver).
With the bezel off, the switch will be released from the dash, but watch for a metal cup that fits between the switch and the dash. Remember its orientation; you will need to put it back in the correct position when you replace the switch.
