Crystalline silica dust is a by-product of blasting with sand, and breathing it greatly increases your chances of getting one of several serious, life-threatening lung diseases.
See Silicosis from sandblasting, on the Virginia Materials and Supply Co. web page.
If that's not enough to deter you, consider the health of your car. Sand blasting can warp sheet metal.
Alternatives include walnut shells and glass beads.
