Single Use Camera

These easy and disposable cameras are ideal for taking photos, where you do not dare to take camera's. Such as in pubs and clubs or other indoor events. Incase your good camera might get damaged or even stolen. They are best suited for the close up snap-shot of friends and family. These cameras are also for those who do not own a camera, but would like picture of a particular event, without buying an expensive camera and film. They come with the film pre-loaded. And when you have finished your roll of film. You take the whole camera to get developed. The camera is then destroyed.

GOOD POINTS:

Cheap introduction to photography for both kids and adults.

No need to worry about if it gets damaged or stolen!

Only ideal for pictures of friends and family at parties etc.

Lens Shutter Camera (compact)

These are point and shoot cameras. Virtually all the controls are automated, and this provides ease of use. The are called Lens Shutter cameras because the shutter is built into the lens. The viewfinder is separate from the picture taking lens. Which means you have to be careful when taking your picture, like chopping off the head. This is known as parallax error. What you see in the viewfinder, is different from what the lens and film can see.

GOOD POINTS:

Easy to use.

Small and compact.

Great for in clubs and pubs.

 

DOWN POINTS:

In order for the subject to be sharply focused. They can only be a few feet away, from the camera.

The overall picture quality.

Some models have a fixed lens.

Single Lens Reflex (SLR) Camera

This is by far the most widely used type of camera. It consists of a single reflex mirror to reflect the image through the lens up to the viewfinder via a pentaprism. When you press the shutter the mirror flips up, so the light can reach the 35mm film. And then the mirror returns to it's original position. SLR Cameras come in two formats, they are; manual focus and auto focus. The cameras tend to have flexible options and programs built in. They offer the operator great result and creativity.

Better quality prints

Good for landscapes as well as macro photography. Flexible!

Twin Lens Camera (TLR) Camera

Twin lens reflex cameras are the older generation of medium format cameras, which have two lenses. One for taking the picture, and one for viewing the picture, yet again you have to be aware of parallax error. They produce 6x6cm images on roll film.

GOOD POINTS:

Cheap introduction to medium format.

 

DOWN POINTS:

Parallax error at close up shots

Difficult to judge filters, such as a gradient filter. Due to viewing through a different lens.

Medium Format Camera

Medium Format cameras are the professional choice for producing quality prints. This is due to the negatives which can measure 6x7cm, and that is five times bigger than 35mm film. And because of this they can be enlarged to bigger prints without the quality of sharpness being affected. Over the range of medium format cameras, they the ability to have interchangeable backs, so you can use different film formats. And unlike the 35mm SLR they use leaf shutters, which allows them to synchronize with the flash at any speed. The Mamiya RZ67 and the Pentax 67 are a popular medium among the professionals

Rangefinder Camera

Like the Compact and TLR cameras, the rangefinder has a separate viewing and taking lens. It is a non-reflex camera, and can also be prone to parallax error; despite some models being corrected for parallax. Before Digital photography, he were the favourite among the photojournalists.

GOOD POINTS:

Quiet to operate.

Light and Compact.

The viewfinder does not black out during exposure.

In some cases Parallax error.

Panoramic Camera

The panoramic camera is best suited to landscape photography. It's format now varies among the camera kingdom. The professional panoramic camera uses 35mm film, although other models which are produced on 6x17cm roll film. However other cameras such as the compact, have the panoramic facility, which offers a budget introduction to elongated panoramic.

GOOD POINTS:

Superb results for landscape/scenic photography.

Sharp large prints.

Can be more expensive

Best suited to one aspect of photography.

Underwater Camera

As it's name suggests it is designed for underwater photography. In the past it was an expensive option, with the Nikonos camera. And Nikon with the world's first SLR auto focus camera. And now at more affordable prices are waterproof compacts. You can also get waterproof casings for the 35mm and compacts.

Great fun.

Weatherproof cameras are for those who want pictures on forbidding terrain for cameras, such as the ski slope or on the beach. And even in the pouring rain. Best suited for protection against the elements.
