Wandering Scots

In the 17th & 18th century many of the distinguished name of MacIntosh left Scotland ,because of the conflict between the church and the Parliment. Those who did not swear alligence to the church faced horrific deaths at the stake or by hanging. Long having been supporters of the crown the MacKintosh Clan found themeselves in a bad position. Many left for greater freedom in Ireland, Australia, and North America.

In 1890 a census was taken in Ireland and at that time it was estimated that 313 people who bore the name McIntosh lived within it's  borders. About 85% were to be found in the area known as Ulster. North American Colonies though were the most popular destination, but a passage was neither cheap nor easily suffered. Those who did manage to make it intact often found land and more tolerent societies in which to live. These settlers formed the backbone of what was to become the Dominion of Canada and The United States of America. It has taken many years for this proud breed to recover from the devistation left by the clearences of the highlands in Scotland.  To which end many Clan Societies and and Highland games have sprung up around the world.

In 1984 the edition of the "Department of Social Security , Report of Distribution"the  surname MacKIntosh is listed as the 2,894th most popular surname in the United States, the surname McIntosh ranks 751st.It is now estimated that there are more then 25,000 McIntosh familys in this country alone.
