Listeners Memories

I'm an old RJN and Radio Atlantis fan... I'm really shocked to here about Rick.... Sadly I never met him but his antics and humour where unique. What a loss!

Phil Dunn - Liverpool

Thought I would share a story with you about when I used to listen to Jackie North.
On 4th November 1981 I had a major back operation in Alder Hey hospital. That weekend I listened to Jackie North. On the Sunday I had some breathing difficulties and the doctors were called. Luckily my sister had requested Big Balls by AC/DC for me. Just as this request started two nuns walked into the ward. You should have seen the look on their faces; I wish I had a camera then. Seeing this I started to laugh and this cleared up my breathing problems. So Jackie North saved me from being probed by some doctors.
I continued to listen to Jackie North on and off until it closed down. Along with the other pirate stations, they have brought me a lot of pleasure over the years and I hope to be able to find out where they are transmitting now

Steve Mann - Liverpool

It was with sadness that I came across your site and learnt of the death of RICK DANE. I have fond memories of tuning into RJN on Saturday afternoons in the early 80`s. I often sent in requests and without fail they were read out at the times requested. I recorded some of these and still have the recordings

Karl Jones - Salford.

Many years ago I actually recieved RJN in west bromwich, I think it was 83 or 84 on a saturday and listened all daytime. Frequency was 300 something cant remember exactly.I tuned in on an old radio cassette recorder plus the famous 'AM squarial antenna' purchaced from anoraks uk in blackpool. Very interesting format - with Jackie Blue (Ozark Mountauin Daredevils) being played on the hour (I havent heard that record for years).
I operated 'Sounds Alternative' from Birmingham from 1980 -1985 plus 'Empire Radio SW' plus regular shows on 'Radio Free Birmingham' & 'County Radio' in the late 70s early 80s. 'Sounds Alternative' could be heard in Norfolk, Derby & into Wales on a normal tx day. The old washing line between two blocks worked very well.
I used to get the regular radio bulitens from anoraks uk and there was always an up to date merseyside section, A few friends of mine had also heard RJN when in Liverpool and in other areas. Several 'Sounds Alternative' listeners from outside of Birmingham had also mentioned in letters that they had heard RJN. I think one other name that used to crop up was 'Merseyland Alternative Radio' although I never heard then myself.
I was just messing on the web and located RJN site by accident, it brings back memories, sorry to hear about Rick. I remember reading about one of his court cases years ago when the judge descibed him as "A misguided pioneer" We were all ahead of our time and I will never forget those days.

keith Rogers - 'Sounds Alternative' 1980-1985 - West Midlands

Internet browsing has led me to this fantastic website and many happy memories. I remember in particular Rick Danes superb shows full of excellent rock music which I used to listen to on a regular basis between 1979 and 1981 ish when I was doing my first house up off Sheil Road. Great days and I was sad to read of Ricks passing

Steve Smith - Liverpool

I would like to say is how sorry I am to hear of the death of Rick Dane who helped brighten up an often damp weekend (Until the cave opened any way) my condolences go out to his family and friends.
It was like being hit with a sledgehammer when I typed in RJN and got a page up and hearing the sad news of Rick. I now shall be viewing the rest of the RJN sites now and just like to finish by saying how brilliant it is to see pages dedicated to the great Radio Jackie North, By far one of the greatest (Pirate) radio stations of all time.

John Cowperthwaite

I shall long remember going to the jackie north rock nites at Annabells Club and at the Lincons Inn back in 79-80. Me and my two mates Julie & Sue would get together in one of our houses and listen to Radio Jackie North on the weekends and we even phoned in some requests a few times and sent in letters to to Rick on a regular basis. He would always send us a reply and was always willing to play requests for the three of us no matter how many we sent in over the time we listend. He must have thought we were utterly nuts but we liked to think that we were in a nice sort of way.
I seem to recall a DJ called Dick Barton who was on RJN with Rick in 78-79 and there were the featured DJ's that were on usualy on a Sunday 11-12 noon. some were a bit ropey but I admired Rick for giving people the chance to strutt their stuff on air.
Sadness fills my heart knowing the world is missing such a dedicared broadcaster and he shall be greatly missed by all RJN & free radio fans everywhere.
I still have some old c90's with some of our request and dedications on them (even though I have moved around a bit since then) and will be rooting them out to have a listen again to what was the finest ever free radio station on merseyside 'Radio Jackie North'
God bless you Eric 'Rick Dane' Haydock, Your memory will always live on in the hearts & minds of the people you played to.

Karen Blake - Toronto - Canada
