February 2, 2008 Making Icecream with the Kids

Do you have an icecream maker?  I've had mine for 18 years and used it maybe 10 times, if that.  Well that's changing.  I just remodeled my kitchen and now longer have to stand on my head to get it out of the cupboard.

We have a tradition begun when my oldest went to school for the first time last year.  At the end of each month we celebrate by going out for a bowl of icecream.  On January 31st we decided to make our own.  What fun and how yummy!

I split up the parts to the recipe so that the time was cut down and everybody got to be a part.  Two collected the ice from the icemaker.  Another got out the machine and checked it over.  Getting the ingredients out went to me and one of the older kids.

We took turns at putting in the ingredients and then we all helped to layer the ice and salt.  While the machine churned, we all cleaned up after ourselves.  Even with a broken cassarole dish along the way, it went smoothly and of course the most fun was sitting down together to oh and ah over the tasty treat.

It's decided.  We'll be making our own icecream each month!

You might want to drag out your maker too.

Blessings,

Mary
