February 19, 2008 Mice and Cookies
Have you read If You Give a Mouse a Cookie? There are a few by a similar title but this one hits home the best when I think of our children. The boy gives a mouse a cookie, and of course mousie wants a glass of milk to go with it. Next the mouse asks for a straw. After checking in the mirror for a milk mustache, he asks for a pair of nail scissors. And so it goes. Each request is granted and there is a trail left as the poor boy rushes on to fulfill the next wish of the mouse. The mouse is adorable and not throwing a tantrum to get what he wants. He just sees the next thing he "needs". The boy is very kind in caring for the mouse. The story winds around to the mouse getting thirsty and asking for a glass of milk and "chances are if he asks for a glass ofmilk, he's going to want a cookie to go with it." The exhausted boy is slumped on the floor with the mouse perched happily on his knee. The once tidy home has crayons, rags, cartons, mops and cleaners strewn around everywhere. I just have to smile because it seems some days are like that for mothers with children at home. There are times to say no but sometimes it's just on to the next thing from morning until night.
